whats the deal with the rebel flag I personally don't mind it, but why do people want to keep bringing up something that happened so long ago. That flag was only used during civil war times, when family and friends had to fight each other and who wants to keep bringing that up???

Scary stuff, getting fired (or layed off)......been there done that!! Hope things are better........usually works out that way.:)

Hi smack sweetie, hope all is ok.:waver:

About that Rebel Flag...... there are those who flaunt the confederacy in the faces of those who were hurt greatly and even those who benefited. KKK, white southern supremecists, etc. But it is a matter of pride for many southerners in honoring the history of their ancestors.

I have no problem with honoring a part of this great nation's history.

But on the other hand we do not fly the flags of countries from which our founders came, be it UK, Holland, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, etc.

We dishonor the nazi flag and what it stood for.

I guesss it's an individual thing.

Sermon ended

Personally, I do not own a single Rebel flag, or image of one unless it's on a CD cover or something like that. But I am a proud Southerner and will scream that until I die.

The flag may cause some resentment in certain groups of people, and that may or may not be real. Face it, if you do the math, not one living person could have been a slave though. The people that are still living that were wronged during the '60's (wronged everywhere, not just Alabama) have a legitimate beef. Most of them choose not to wear their hurt on their sleeves; instead, they have taken the experience and taught their children and anyone else who will listen that intolerance is evil, not race. A few act like it was them who was wronged, when they were not even born yet. But I digress from the topic of the Rebel flag.

Zealots on both sides of the issue make much ado about the Rebel flag, when in reality if they would shut up it would probably fade away in time. I am very proud of my Southern heritage, more so of my Appalachian heritage. I am not proud of every event, every policy, every decision, or every ideology that has transpired in the South. But I'll take it anyday over the alternatives. I have seen more racial prejudice outside the South than I have ever seen in it. I will not name names, as I do not wish to hurt anyone's regional pride. I don't want people stomping on Dixie, so I won't stomp on their turf.

The Rebel flag stands for many things to many people, some good some atrocious. All of these feelings have their own level of validity. I weep for the injustices done to the Blacks, the Native Americans, the Asian citizens imprisoned during WWII, the European settlers during the Revolutionary War era, and all others who have been wrongly treated. But to single out the Rebel flag when so many other symbols are equally hurtful is not the solution. Tolerence is the solution. If we as a society are to avoid making the same mistakes we smugly criticize our elders for making, we shall surely repeat them.

TN-Ward..........well said!!:) I'm from Arkansas, living in Southern California and one of the first things I noticed when I moved here was the racial slurs!! Not only against Black Americans but about almost any minority. While in Ark I was really puzzled by all the talk about racism in this country.........I was living in the South and I just didn't see it as a problem (occassionally it would crop up, but very seldom). The South was supposed to be the place where racism was rampede........but, I found out that where it was really rampede (sorry TRL....spelling just doesn't seem correct but I'm too lazy to go get my dictionary!!:) ) was out here in the "land of the enlightened"!! So I know what region you are referring to. The Confederate (Rebel) flag is just a flag......not an official flag at that!! People get all bent out of shape over a flag and then bash the one part of the country that really has less racism than where the bashers are living!:(

to Tn-Ward :calpping::calpping:

Much applause for a very well put answer:dazzler:

With my origin of birth, I must say I have seen much more bigotry of all kinds in my 59 years, none since I moved to GA except for those few radical extremists.

PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

This comes up every once in awhile. Ya'll have made some great points, and I to have seen more wrong acts outside of the south. I hear the word ****** more now than ever, but it is 9 times out of 10 a black saying it. If two blacks get in a fight the first word in ****** and the second is MFer. If a white man talked like that he would be sued now adays.

I use to live in a city in north carlina where they had gang wars the 2 major gangs were white and black only that fought constantly. THis was years ago though, you might not see it but it is a fact most hate crimes occur in the south. Whats with all the cops beating blacks lately or am I the only one who has saw this stuff on the news???

Believe me smack, cops love to beat, strip search, harrass, etc even citizens who have done no wrong. (Unfortunately for me)

Lots of cops are on such a power high, they don't belong as "Law Enforcement Officers".

um it wasnt one guy it was 3 of em hes one it was on cnn all morning the other day I think it was in 3 seperate states too

Kat, where the hell did you get that idea?

And smack, all the cops don't beat blacks. Do I agree with what they did? Not on your life. That officer went way overboard and I'm sure that his career, and for the most part, his life, is over. Did you hear about the officer that got hit by a car and will have to have an operation and hopefully he'll get to walk without hurting for the rest of his life? No, I guess that didn't put that on the news. No one wants to hear that. Let's see.....How about the officer who was shot six times in the face and he left behind a newborn baby and wife? Nope, no national coverage either. I know....you had to have heard about the cop that was splattered all over the interstate after he was hit by a car after he stopped to help someone change a tire. Didn't hear about that one either? How about the officer who was killed on a SWAT call by a man who had just killed another officer? SWAT was activated and the team went into a house to get this guy and he shot the officer in the hear with a 30.06. Not that either? I can go on for a little while if you want.....And this doesn't include the "little things" like getting spit on, hit from behind by the wife after you lock up her husband because he can home drunk and split her lip, stopping a car for doing 40 mph over the posted speed limit and having to listen to" the only reason I pulled them over is because they are black"...even thought its 3:30AM and it too dark to see if its a male or female, much less if the are white, black, green, blue, ect.

I am not defending the officer for Inglewood at all. Like I said, he went too far and he will pay for it the rest of his life. But don't judge all police officers, sheriff deputies, ect just because a few have screwed up.

And something else to think about.....how many times do you hear about the black officer beating a white guy? Or and black beating a white cop? Not that often, huh? Does it happen? I don't even need to answer that.

Oh, and smack, as far as most of the hate crimes happening in the South, re-check your figures. Most are in the central US and mid-west. And anytime you would like to go on a ride-along, please, let me know. I would love to open your eyes......

Outstanding post fergy. Using the logic of a small but vocal minority in this country, we should judge all cops by the actions of a half dozen. But God forbid the police use valid statistics to target high crime areas...that's "racial profiling". If cops are to be condemned for the actions of the scant few, then are we all not subject to the same line of reasoning? I've got long hair, and am very male. I knew when I grew it that some people would stereotype and discriminate, and I was right. But those people are not worth the sweat off my censored.

If it's unfair and even prejudiced to discriminate against a particular group of people, even if statistics support a few of the claims, then it is unfair to discriminate against policemen. Last time I checked, they were a group of people too. Rant on fergy. Harumph!!

no I wasnt saying all cops over use there power theres plenty of nice cops, and no its not always blacks they over abuse there powers on. I was just bringing up these perticular incidents cause they were on the news lately, nice post anyway though. :)

Fergy I posted some sites up before about racism and most organized racist/prejudist groups still come from the south east region. I'm not sure on every little hate incident though, theres no way to know about all of them. check out www.adl.org ...

back to the flag thing...

do i hate blacks NO. do i hate some one of a diff background NO. do i have a flag YES. do i fly it YES. i am from the south and i am proud that i am a souther. i fly the flag as part of my shouter pride. and lets get real the flag looks damn good. and some times i wish the south did win. just so i could fly the flag with out getting sued or shot by a black man

if i say no i would be lieing.

if i say yes i will offend or i would piss someone off.

so i think the late JIMMY says it best "the rebel flag looks damn good and thats all that matters"

Lap3, it doesn't matter what you do or how you do it, someone will always be pissed by what you do...its just the way life is now. Just like the post earlier with this thread, even people think cops love doing things that are wrong. You will never please half the people you piss off.

Life is too short to worry about what other people think.....do what you think is right and what you believe in. It may be wrong, and it might be right....but you'll be happy.

Like segregation ever went away. Only difference is, now each group does it voluntarily, then sit back and pat themselves on the back for how open minded they are. Gimme a break. Unless it is totally unavoidable, 95% of the people (ALL the people) prefer the company of their own ilk. Just open your eyes and you'll see it. Go to a college campus, the closest thing I can think of to a true melting pot, and watch who hangs with who. And as for the outcome of the War Between The States, I continue to submit that segregation, prejudice, and racial discrimination is more rampant outside of Dixie than within. For instance, and I truly do not mean to step on anyone's toes, I have a dear friend who lives in (without getting specific) a state bordering Canada. She tells me that, unless they are a player or a player's family member from the (insert NFL team name here) you never see a black person. But we're segregated and need to learn from the enlightened folk up yonder. Gimme one small break here.

"In Dixieland I'll make my stand, to live and die in Dixie..."

The war was not about freeing slaves. The war was about collecting tariffs and taxes from the South & Southern shipping ports who practiced "free trade" with other Countries. The dictator during this time, Sir Abraham himself, had the full intention of returning slaves back to their homeland. He made several statements that he had no intention of making the slaves an equal to the whites. He was a racist that would be jailed today by the PC police..
How come other countries, like the Brits, ended slavery peacefully? Other countries eliminated slavery without killing each other. Why were we different? It was $$$$. Not slavery. Sir dictator himself knew that the pace the South had set they were in a position to become the wealthiest section of the country. The South revolted because they refused to "pay up".
The Flag: States that kept slaves but stayed loyal to the Union also had slaves. So the stars and stripes doesn't represent slavery? Right? When the first Stars & Stripes flag was flown, the areas it flew over were slave holding states. But Only the Confederate flag can mean slavery ?
Abe Lincoln imprisioned over 800 people in the North who vocally disagreed with him stopping states sucession from the Union. He jailed Northern newspaper publishers who disagreed with his dictator style assalt on the Constitution. He blocked states sucession from the Union, which our Constitution says we have a right to do so. He declaired war on the South, without the consent/approval of Congress. His generals burnt, raped, murdered, women and children even after the Confederate army was scattered and defeated. We are still here. We survived.
All I read on this board is the result of years of education in our public schools. Which being ran by the government teaches only what they want taught. Abe did more to destroy this country than any other president. The Confederate flag reminds me of a group of states that stood up to a tyrant, gave there lives to be free of dictator rule, much the same way this great country was founded. They died for it, and believed in a mans right to live per the groundwork our founding fathers set through the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
