Surprise semi-finalist last year, Team USA has announced its intention to go one better in this year's Michelin Race of Champions Nations' Cup by being the first country to name its high calibre trio, led by four times Winston Cup Champion and NASCAR deity, Jeff Gordon.
The Michelin Race of Champions is an action-packed, sun-drenched weekend of head-to-head duelling between the kings of world motorsport. Inked into most driver diaries at the start of the year, the event's appeal is uniquely defined by ferocious on-track action teamed with the friendliest paddock on the motorsport calendar.
The Nations' Cup, now in its fourth year, has quickly become the star attraction of the weekend. The contest sees each participating nation enter a team of three, comprising one rally/off-road driver, one circuit racer and one bike rider.
Team USA's Gordon will be supported by his young protégé and this year's NASCAR rookie sensation, Jimmie Johnson, with teenage multiple X-Games champion, Travis Pastrana, making up the trio.
Gordon commented: "I love the format of the event. Pitting the best drivers in the world from all forms of motorsport against each other in a head-to-head elimination contest will be exciting. "I've never driven a rally car and it's been a while since I've raced on dirt. Hopefully I can adjust and represent the United States well."
The team's off-road expertise will be lent by Johnson, whose stock-car circuit success was preceded by two years racing trucks over loose surfaces. NASCAR's leading Rookie added: "Personally, I can't wait for the competition. Jeff is going to be our asphalt driver and Travis our bike rider, so that leaves me racing against the off road guys. It will be very challenging competing against top drivers like Marcus Gronholm and some of the other dirt specialists in the competition. I grew up off road racing and have raced in the Baja 1000 and in the stadium truck series in the mid-1990's, so I'm confident that I will be able to hold my own and compete against the best in the world".
Fredrik Johnson, President of race organisers, IMP, enthused: "Since we introduced the Nations' Cup to the Michelin Race of Champions in 1999, the event's appeal and reputation has spread like wild fire across world motor sport.
"This year's Team USA is a great example - we've got the biggest name in US motorsport, Jeff Gordon, as team captain, his NASCAR protégé and currently 3rd placed driver in the Winston Cup, Jimmie Johnson, and one of the world's most exciting young extreme sports talents, Travis Pastrana."
Responding quickly to the challenge laid down by Team USA, defending champions, Spain, and winners of the inaugural Nations' Cup, Finland, have also announced their line-ups. The Spanish team looks particularly strong, with 8-times Spanish Rally Champion, Jesus Puras and Renault's young Formula 1 driver, Fernando Alonso back from last year's winning trio, and Spain's leading Moto GP rider, Carlos Checa replacing Ruben Xaus as the team's biker.
Following a disappointing first round exit at last year's event, Finland has reverted to the biker/racer combination of Kari Tiainen and JJ Lehto that, in combination with Tommi Makinen, presided in 1999. The 2000 World Rally Champion, Marcus Gronholm, will be the key third piece of the Finnish jigsaw.
To claim the first prize they crave, the Americans will also have to overcome the formidable challenge presented by teams from Great Britain, Italy, Germany and the 2000 Nations' Cup champions, France, all of whom will be announcing their line-ups shortly.
With many drivers still to confirm their availability, the entry list already has the look of a Who's Who of world motorsport; the event provides Michelin, title sponsor and official tyre supplier since 1988, with the ideal end of season platform to showcase and celebrate the success of its stars of Rally, F1 and Moto GP as well as Endurance racing and Motocross.
Last year's Champion of Champions, Harri Rovanpera, has confirmed he will be back to defend his title and hot on his heels are sure to be his Peugeot team mate, World championship leader Marcus Gronholm, Hyundai's Armin Schwarz, young WRC stars, Citroen's Sebastien Loeb and Ford driver, Francois Duval plus Audi's all-conquering Le Mans trio of Frank Biela, Tom Kristensen and Emanuele Pirro.
The fifteenth running of the event will once more see the dilapidated dustbowl of the Circuit Ciudad Deportiva Islas Canarias in Telde, Gran Canaria, converted virtually overnight by Michele Mouton's team, and several hundred willing locals, into a twin-tracked sporting amphitheatre - resplendently dressed in sponsors' hoardings - with its hillsides adorned by a fanatical and flamboyant local public.
The 2002 Michelin Race of Champions will be staged over the weekend of Friday, 29 November - Sunday, 1 December. As in 2001, the Nations' Cup will take place on Saturday afternoon, preceded by the Rally Legends and Juniors competitions on Saturday morning and the Spanish Masters on Friday afternoon. The fastest drivers of Friday and Saturday will then qualify through to the headline individual challenge, the Michelin Race of Champions - Rally Masters on Sunday.
The high calibre international cast assembled annually for the Nations' Cup has contributed to huge year-on-year increases in the Michelin Race of Champion's television audience. Coverage climbed for the eighth consecutive year in 2001, with the event broadcast on 290 channels in 187 countries
