Where Do The Veterans Do Best?

Well, this came up in another thread. The concept of veteran friendly tracks.

So I looked at the last 3 years winners at all the tracks and counted how many years of Cup racing each driver had durign the year he won the race. Any year a driver raced double digit races was considered a year for that drive.

Enough of the methodolgy....

Here's the average years of Cup racing by the winners at each of the 23 active track over the past 3 years....

14.50 Darlington
14.33 Pocono
13.33 Homestead
13.33 Indy
11.67 Sears Point
11.33 Rockingham
11.00 Las Vegas
10.50 Daytona
10.00 Michigan
8.50 Charlotte
8.00 Richmond
7.67 Martinsville
7.33 Kansas
6.67 Talladega
6.67 Texas
6.33 Atlanta
6.00 Watkins Glen
5.33 NHIS
5.00 Phoenix
4.00 Bristol
4.00 California
2.83 Dover
1.67 Chicago

The only tracks to not have a 1st or 2nd year driver win on them in the last 3 years are Indianapolis, Sears Points, Kansas, Las Vegas, Michigan, Rockingham, Phoenix, Waktins Glen, and Darlington.

Extend that out to 3rd year drivers and it drops down to Las Veags, Watkins Glen, and Darlington.

Extend that out to 4th year drivers and the only track left is Darlington. The least experienced driver to win at Darlington was Ward Burton in his 8th season in 2001.

Cool. Thanks, TB. :salute:

Looks like Texas Terry may have single-handedly propelled Darlington to the top of the charts last fall. :einstein:

;)

Darlington would have been my pick without all the stats. The lady is rough on newbies.

I'm not trying to dispute your data, but didn't Craven win at Darlington last year? I didn't think he'd been on the curcuit that many years. I could be wrong about that though. I swear I think he came along after Ward did.

Not only Kurt finished 2nd and strong in the fall

Ricky first started competing in Cup racing full time in 1995. That means he was in his 9th season when he won at Darlington (now on year #10). So he had a bit more seat time than Ward did (first full year was 1994), but not much.

Then he did come along after Ward did. 94 came before 95, right? Plus wasn't Ricky off recuperating for most of a season?

Just curious.

Ricky only ran 11 races in 1998, if that's what you mean. But apparantley, that's enough to count as a full season.

Ward Burton won at Darlington in 2001. First year in Cup was 1974. So 2001 was his 8th season.

Ricky Craven won at darlington in 2003. First year in 1995 (and he made double digit starts in every year since then). So 2003 was his 9th season.

Ohhh, I gotcha. Wasn't factoring in the year of each driver's win. Now the light bulb goes on.
