A little earlier today, I watched a few clips from the DVD Woodstock: 3 Days of Music and Art a music festival that occured 40 years ago this coming August. In Auguest of 1969 I was in the Air Force in Okinawa. Where has the time gone? Thing is, most of those songs are still being played on many radio stations these days and are still good. And, many of the musicians are still playing today. It took me back to those hippie years. Far out man! :)

the reason those old songs are still being played and the musicians are still popular is that the so called music since then has been pitiful for the most part. good solo artists and groups are hard to come by now.

Buck,
I feel yer pain. ;) 40 years ago this past April 6th I returned to the world and was discharged.

If you find out where the time went would you please let me know?

40 yrs ago, I'd just graduated from college, and had accepted my first(and only) teaching job. This month marks my 10 yr anniversary being RETIRED!

buck, I'm with SST, if you find out where the time went, let me know. *sigh*

LOL As I was reading this, there was an ad for the DVD at the bottom of the page. :D

Woodstock as before my time (although I think Hendrix playing the National Anthem was one of the greatest events in music history), but seeing all the stuff about Michael Jackson makes me feel old.

I was just a kid when Jackson was in his prime, and every kid I knew had his Thriller album. Kind of amazing how that album is getting close to 30 years old, and it's still the best-selling album of all time.

When I got back to the states in '70, I befriended another fellow AF member who was from upstate New York. He told me that he was on leave at the time and he and his brother decided to ride their bikes to the fest to see what it was all about. Very little publicity about it all, so many people didn't know what all the traffic was for. Rizzie said that he and his brother finally made it to the site but didn't have tickets. Later the fences were torn down and everyone had free admittance to the festival. He said he only stayed there one day and then left.

Since that time, there have been attempts to recreate festivals to rival Woodstock, but nothing ever reached the heights that were reached at Woodstock.

My father and his buddies were going to drive to the Altamont Free Concert, but my father ended up backing out while his friends still went.

They said it was complete chaos.

Thanks for adding "supposedly." I am convinced that if as many people attended Woodstock as claimed to be there, the total gate would have been close to two million.

I guess that is like a lot of things in life. I can tell you for sure that I wasn't, though I sure would have loved to have been there. From what you could see in the movie, probably on Saturday, the crowd was the heaviest, but at the end, when Jimi Hendrix closed the festival, the crowd was very small. How many of those that left now wished that they hadn't?

Thinking about it, I'm trying to decide what my favorite song was from the fest. It's hard to beat Hendrix, but there were several that were just as good. The Who was terrific of course, and even Richie Havens was sweet. Crosby, Stills and Nash were especially good, but I have to give my top nod to Santana and their song Soul Sacrifice. It's still one of my favorite songs and I will play it often.

There are several bands that didn't make the movie that I wish had, among them Blood Sweat and Tears, CCR and Johnny Winter. Also, the festival invited but were turned down by the Doors, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Bob Dylan, Tommy James and the Shondells, and the Moody Blues among others. I've read that some of those groups/artists kicked themselves in the pants for not going.

Just skipping down memory lane...
