•NASCAR goes to smaller plate at Daytona: NASCAR reportedly will down-size restrictor plate holes for next week's Sprint Cup Goodyear tire test at Daytona International Speedway. The new size will be 29/32 of an inch. The old size was 30/32 of an inch. The result will be less power and, presumably, slower speeds. The track surface at Daytona was repaved since last year's summer race. In earlier tests [January], the new surface, which is smoother and stickier, produced higher speeds [197mph].(RaceToday)(1-13-2011)

Prolly not a bad idea with the fresh surface. It's just for testing and they'll probably make a decision on plate size for the race based on test speeds.

When are the plate tracks not mundane? Honestly it's just 500 miles of follow the leader.
Three and four wide all the time. Very mundane. Once the race begins, the lineup never changes. Yawn, nothing ever happens in the plate races. Why all the cars are the same.

I don't see how anyone can say plate tracks are boring. Granted they do have moments of single file racing(that Dega race was a fluke). You have 3 and 4 wide racing and ANYONE on the lead lap can win.

My problem with it is.NASCAR & Goodyear do a tire test.GY goes back and makes changes to the tires based off test numbers. Now they go to test 2 GY brings the tires they changed to be better for the first car they tested but now NASCAR brings a slower car to test the tires for the faster car. They finish test 2 and GY goes back and makes changes to the tires again for the race.So now it's race time and GY brings tires for the car in test 2 and we all know what NASCAR will do.2 days before the race put another smaller plate. So you will have a different car running on tires designed for car no.2.

I totally agree. Edge of the seat action most all of the race. That last Talladega race was awesome and most everyone on this board agreed. Those that didn't aren't going to find any plate race exciting IMO.

As far as the restrictor plate goes..... Heck, they were running 197 the first time out on the new surface. And, that wasn't with their top notch equipment. Next Thursday & Friday, they'll be there again and they'll work on those setups more. Once they get back there for Speedweeks they'll be running their best stuff. This is nothing more than a preventative measure to keep these cars from sitting next to you in the stands. Unless you sitting in the stands watching your stopwatch, you'll never notice the difference in speed anyway.

At the end, when the drivers finally decide to race and not just cruise around, it is indeed very exciting. Passing for the sake of passing during the middle 200 laps is not exciting. Are they going back and forth for the lead? Yes. Do the drivers actually care who is in front?

Not until the end.

i still say they ought to be able to get to at least to 200mph...

That can be said for almost any track nowadays

Meaningless passing? Too funny. Where can I find the definition of a meaningful pass? Is that kinda like porn? It can't be defined but I know it when I see it.

I really don't care what they do. I'm seriously jonesing for some auto racing. I'm getting sick of watching NFL. With the way the weather has been around here there haven't been any car shows or anything related to HP and high octane fuel.

Unless they remove the first 50-75 rows of seating Na$car isn't going to let the speeds climb any higher, IMHO of course. You know they won't remove the seating. After the Brad and Carl Air Show I wonder just how comfortable they are with 190+

Just one car in the stands is all it'll take.

LOL, We complain if there isn't any passing and complain if there is. Gotta love Nascar fans.

Can I get an AMEN?

I drove 8 hours one way last weekend to watch some snowmobile racing. :D
