I wasn't around those days. By the stats it has to be Richard Petty but from what I gather from others on the internet and people I talk too the answer would be Cale.

Mustang............raw stats are sometimes deciving. Richard Petty had almost 1200 starts so his numbers, just by law a averages is going to be higher. Percentages work better, in the end, it's just everyone's preferrances or opinions.:)

I know Pearson had some interesting stats but didn't know the numbers.

Cale was my choice ! If you don't know much about these drivers, Get to reading on them..

I will go with Petty since I am a die-hard Petty fan. Odd thing most Petty fans became a Petty fan because of Richard but I became a Petty fan because of Kyle. TO tell you the truth I have no idea how I became a Kyle fan. I have been a fan of his for as long as I can rember. When I went to my first race back in 1988(6 years old) I think he was driving for the Wood Brothers then, so it could not have been the car because it was an ugly looking car. The only other car I remember from then is Bill Elliot.

I said Cale, simply because he could do more with an ill-handling car than the others. To me, that is the first criterion of a good versus a great driver. My heart said either Pearson or Isaac. Pearson was the master of strategy, thus the Silver Fox moniker. Petty has the numbers. Allison was always underrated in my eyes. Lee Petty I never saw race. Isaac had the raw talent to rewrite the record books. But Cale while never one of my favorites, was the one driver you just KNEW was gonna be competitive every week, short track or speedway or road course.

Good poll. Wish Curtis Turner and Fred Lorenzen had been on it too though.

Now for my opinion. How can you tell who was the better driver? I don't think you can. Statistics can help in some ways but can also be decieving. For example how many times has a front runner been taken out of a race by an accident caused by someone else? This could alter the final standings considerably.
The equiptment also plays a big part. Richard Petty switched to Chevy in the late 70's (1977 ? ) and didn't win in that year.
Dale Earnhardt had a great run for several years and started dropping off. And Jeff Gordon has also had three of four years with phonominal runs and has dropped off performance wise. Is it the driver or the equiptment or both?
Hopefully what I am saying above makes a little sense.
I know a lot of people who don't like Jeff Gordon claim he can't drive, that the car wins the race. Other drivers also have their detractors to. Dale Sr. could drive the wheels off of a car and several people claim he could only win by wrecking the competition.
All well, thanks to all who responded.

All those drivers are great drivers, including Jeff Gordon. But you can't win races with a junk car, no matter if your Earnhardt or Petty. The equipment plays a huge role but you need a good driver to keep that equipment good and running.

Mustang you hit the nail square on the head with that!!:) You can never separate the driver from the equipment (team).........never have you been able to do that and never will you be able to do that!:) Best driver in the world in a bad car will, at best, do mediocre..........worst driver in the world in the a good car will, at best, do mediocre.

You just get the right combination, great driver with great equipment and crew, and they will be unbeatable until one of those factors goes sour.

cale or dale are the only two answers that come to my mind. dale wasn't there and neither was richmond.

My vote definnitely goes for "The King" Richard Petty.
