Who gets the 2016 Olympics?

As much as I'd like to see Chicago get the 2016 Olympic games, I don't think it will happen. Chicago is too corrupt, and has too many other problems like public transit to effectively host the games.

However, I would be absolutly shocked if Rio got the games. Rio is one of the most violent cities in the world. The Northern district is effectively controlled by drug lords. The most recent crime data, as of 2007, says that an average of 30 people were murdered every week.

I'm confused as to how Rio got this far in the bid process. How can they hope to protect all the visting athletes and dignitaries?

I think Tokyo like likely to get the games. They've hosted it once before, and they have one of the best transit systems in the world.

As sad as this story is, I don't see this as being something that prevents Chicago from getting the Olympics.

Chicago does have a gang problem on the Southside, but it's far from being anything on par with Rio. Most of the people killed in Chicago are gang members (usually killed by CPD), or kids killed by said gang members.

One of the worst shootings happened last year. Over one weekend, 38 people were shot in un-related shootings. I think 8 of those died. That was very unusual for Chicago. At most, 3-5 people are killed by gun violence per week here. LA and Washington DC are much worse when it comes to shootings.

No, if Chicago doesn't get the games it will be because of financial seasons. The City has no clear way of paying for the games. Although they have a very reasonable budget of $4.8 billion to pay for the game, none of it is committed. Therefore, a lot of local residents are expecting that our taxes will get hiked to pay for it.

Chicago does have some things going for it, though. For one, the plan is to build most of the new buildings needed on city owned land, and in parks. A lot of those buildings will be temporary. Thus, Chicago has the lowest cost of the 4 bid cities to host the games. And not just by a small margin either. Rio, whom many consider the "front-runner" for the bid, has a needs nearly $30 billion to host the games.

Chicago also has two International airports, both within a 20 minute drive of downtown. That's a huge plus for the volume of traffic that will be coming in because of the games.

Has the Olympics ever been profitable for the host city? I really don't know.
I know major corps donate massive amounts but can they in today's economic climate?

If I was a stockholder in XYZ corp I'm not going to be happy not getting a dividend check because they spent millions building the Ping Pong Pavillion.:D

With the restictions on flying, the TSA along with Homeland Security this has all the makings of a massive nightmare.

It would be nice to have it here, but I just don't see it. As far as traffic the only place I can think of that is scarier to drive is in California. Chicago interstates are insane!
Southside Chicago has always been harsh even before there were gangs lol. I took a wrong turn once ended up there, and I thought Gary was scary.

As bad as Jerry Jones has it for trying to put any kind of show under his roof at the new stadium.I don't doubt he's going to try and get it here in Dallas.

It could be a done deal. Otherwise why would a certain couple be traveling to Copenhagen to petition the IOC to put the Olympics in Chicago. If that's a failure that would be a huge loss of face, IMO. And, at a time when he needs all the victories he can garner.

I really hope Chicago doesn't get the Olympics. The Olympics are such an overrated, corrupt institution that it is hard for me to believe that that many people still want to host it.

ARLINGTON, not dallas.

I agree that Madrid or Tokyo are the leading bids right now...

I am so disapointed that our corrupt mayor here in Birmingham didn't have time in between Fraud charges and a bankrupt county and almost bankrupt city to bid on getting the Olympics to Birmingham. What a terrible loss!!!

Actually, there aren't many sports, if any, that are more exciting than the Olympics.

My bet would be on Tokyo getting them. They would host a great Olympics.

Yeah, nothing like watching a badmitten match between Vietnam and South Korea!!!

Give me the Winter Olympics minus the Figure skating.

Wont be Chicago or Tokyo. Both were eliminated in the first round.

I'll be shocked if Rio wins. How can they hope to keep the athletes safe when 5000 people were murdered there last year? That's 14 people murdered every day.

You'd probably have better luck hosting the games in Kabul, Afghanistan.

In honor of Rio getting the 2016 Olympic Games:

Rio was a bad place for the Olympics.

Rio was a bad place for the Olympics.

The plan was to expand the Olympic games. No country in South America has ever hosted the Olympics and Brazil has a very strong economy right now. As for it not going to Chicago, i didnt expect it to go there since we had it in Atlanta in 96 and the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 02. Not to mention next years winter olympics is in Vancouver which is in Canada right next to the US border.

We have hosted the Olympics 8 times according to the reporting I saw. That's both summer and winter games.

The scandel in Utah in '02 hasn't been forgotten by the Olympic committee.

Not sure this should go here but how about MObama's plea for the Olympics.
“Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad’s lap, cheering on Olga and Nadia, Carl Lewis, and others for their brilliance and perfection.”

She would have been between 20 and 28 and she was still sitting in her dad's lap watching TV?? uhoh, that smells wrong. But, then she was quite the dresser back then as her prom dress shows with its high slit and low cut top. Maybe daddy liked her sitting on his lap. IDK.

Also, note she was cheering on 2 commies and someone who butchered the National Anthem. But, then she was not proud to be an American back then.

Gak BP there should have been a warning with that!!!!!!!!!!! Bad BP bad!
