Who knows

i did it purposely. I knew exactly what i was doing and made backups for that just in case factor.

I think I must be missing part of the question.
As to Ad-Aware and Spybot, go to ccleaner.com and get it as well. It's free and does a decent job on stuff those 2 miss.

I'm asking who knows how to operate a computer when theres no desktop icons or start button.

the answer is actually quite obvious, but very few people use it. Which is why i did it, because now i highly doubt that many people would know how to use my computer if they tried.

OR

You can simply hold the "on" button in for 10 secs or so and the machine will turn OFF. Then push the button again and start all over..
With all the new programs and stuff lock-ups are more popular than ever. A GOOGLE or YAHOO toolbar will give lots and lots of headaches. If you have one of those throw it away..
Betsy:rolleyes:

y'll sure aint got much for humor.

You use the keyboard instead of the start button and the quick links bar instead of desktop icons.

no i have friends over all the time.

one of them about crashed cuz he didnt know what he was doin...had to use last known good to recover.

needless i wasn't exactly happy with a nearly crashed 6-700 dollar computer system.

spent 100 on a gaming case, 50 dollars in fans, got a 600 watt PSU for free, Graphics card was 100 new, sound card is worth 40 bucks but came OEM, that and the motherboard are the only hardware left from the origional Dell 4600 (i dont count hard drive as hardware). And im bout to spring 180 or 200 on a new graphics card unless i see a new motherboard come out that meets my specs, then i'll do a $500 package deal on a graphics card and PCI-E motherboard.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/building/175283-mobo-choices.html

ok, at this point, all i'm looking for is a sub-150 dollar motherboard-

intel OR AMD
PCI-E (only need 1 gfx slot)
GB ethernet
4 RAM slots
Must fit Antec 900 case (ATX and mATX)
no fanless design or heatpipes (in otherwords, i like the old fashioned fan system)
4 or 6 SATA (prefer SATA2 but not neccesity)
6+ rear USB (preferred, apparently most only supply 4 nowadays)
2+ 1394a (one each front/rear) (preferred)

I have a sound blaster live digital so onboard audio isn't a factor.

Here's some that i'm looking at, if there's one you like/have thats not listed and meets my specs do post it. (pretty muche every one fry's has from 85 to 110 bucks)

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5066475 $85
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5138996 $109
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4775779 $90
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5061025 $80
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/4968181 $95
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5329938 $100

Keep in mind that i'll have to also buy a processor and heatsink, so the cheaper the mobo (but not like $40 cheap) the better. If it's a 20 pin mobo that'll save me PSU cost. If it has 2 IDE slots, that'll save me SATA burner cost.

Here's my budget:

3.0GHz P4 single core $77
700w PSU $120
SATA DVD Writemaster $55
GeForce 7600GT $140 ($100)
RAM $150
mobo $150

That's 550 bucks i pretty much know i'm going to spend before i even get to the mobo.

thats about what i'm lokign at, but im going to run 2GB of hard memory regardless.

looking on google, thats exactly the board i would need, matches my stuff i got going now.

have you had to RMA that gfx card any? That'd actually make this halfway cheap for me.

Had this for about 2 years now no RMA's on anything. Works like a dream. I do a lot of video editing from my sony HDD camcorder and it works great. I'll probably upgrade in January. I do it every 3 years....just because I can.;) Let me know if you are in the market then

if you havet had any problems with it then yea i'll let you know how my evolution is by then. I'm setting aside 25 bucks out of these first 2 paychecks to my computer fund, but it'll be less until i get more hours. I'll be 18 soon and getting out of school around noon so i'll have some money flow soon. not to mention website income and other stuff i make money from (i'll have bout 75 or 100 coming in here soon i hope off some DVD's).

awwww. I didn't know you were only 17. You act much more mature.

What you should have done is take a screen shot of your desktop with all the icons, start button etc. Then hide the real ones. Folksies will go crazy trying to click on an icon that's not really there.
Did that to a guy at work. He truly thought something had gone screwy with his PC. It took him awhile to realize what we had done.

my mom agreed to get me the mobo for my birthday so thats 90 i dont have to spend. Knocks my expendature down to $370. The rate i'm going January should be about right for everything.

just counted, i should have $125 in my computer fund just off paychecks at $5 a week plus the 25 from these last 2 weeks. as mentioned should have 50 or so dollars off the DVD's so that puts me at 175 already. Count in 2 dollars a week from chores is 56 bucks, and 20 from birthday/christmas so that puts me at 250 bucks. That'll cover everything except the new power supply, and i can deal with hopefully via a 20 to 24 adapter since mines a 600 watt right now (but only 20 pins).

ok so newegg wants 33 bucks for an 18x SATA DVD burner...it's the exact one i have but in SATA version. So I could probably sell mine for 20 (it's lightscribe), get the SATA version, and be out all of 10 bucks. And get a second so i can be rid of a ribbon cable (2 for 40 bucks really aint a bad deal if i can get rid of mine for enough). 320GB SATA drives are 75 bucks so i'd have to absorb a big cost. Get the new drive, install it, ghost my IDE over, empty/reformat the IDE, then sell it for 75 bucks (IDE and SATA drives are bout same price on ebay).

Be alot easier to manage wires, too.
