With sadler only needing to start the race, and kurt busch needing to finish in at least 42nd place, positions 1-7 are pretty much a lock. however, that puts the final 3 spots in limbo...as of right now, those positions are
Newman
Kahne
Martin

how will it end up after this weekend's race?

My prediction

8. Kahne
9. Newman
10. McMurray

anyone else? Not so sure this should be an agree/disagree thing, but more of a list what you think and we'll see after saturday night kind of deal...

What I would like to see is Jr, Gordon, and Johnson either blow motors or crash and end up finishing 41, 42 and 43rd. That would allow all of them to get under 400 points. The more the better.... DRAMA on TNT baby!!!!

These picks will surprise some.

Martin
B. Labonte
Jarrett

If Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon find trouble, there could easily be more than 10 drivers in the chase.

Currently 6 driver are within 400 points of leader Jimmie Johnson.
Currently 11 drivers are within 400 points of 2nd place Jeff Gordon.
Currently 15 drivers are within 400 points of 3rd place Dale Earnhardt Jr.

One quick scenario that may illustrate just how possible this is....

* Jimmie Johnson finishes 30th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3555 points.
* Jeff Gordon finishes 14th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3553 points.
* Dale Earnhardt Jr wins the race while leading the most laps - finishes the race with 3556 points.

- Everyone through 7th place Kurt Busch already has more than 3156 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 8) Ryan Newman finishes 28th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3157 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 9) Kasey Kahne finishes 24thwithout leading a lap - finishes the race with 3158 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 10) Mark Martin finishes 21st without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3158 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 11) Jamie McCmuarry finishes 13th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3157 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 12) Bobby Labonte finishes 10th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3156 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 13) Dale Jarrett finishes 8th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3157 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 14) Jeremey Mayfield finishes 5th without leading a lap - finishes the race with 3158 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.
- 15) Kevin Harvick finishes 6th while leading a lap - finishes the race with 3157 points and would be within 400 points of the lead.

Which is proof positive that it won't happen right there.

Yeah no way that a driver who has 2 wins, 5 top 5 finishes, 7 top 10 finishes in 10 races at a track could possibly win a race at that track.

Man, I have no idea how this will all come down Saturday night!! :) I do like the idea of the top two or three having problems and everyone else having stellar nights though!! Man can you imagine 15 drivers having a very good shot at the Championship? I'm just trying to find a way to put Jimmy Spencer in the hunt too.........any suggestions on magic calculators that might come up the numbers for that to happen? :D

I wonder how many nay sayers are rethinking this new format now. It's shaping up to be pretty exciting........a lot more exciting than last year about this time. :)

If every other car on the circuit fails to show up for the race, but the drivers come to the trackand throw stuff at the 4 car while he drives, there might be an opportunity for spencer to gain enough points and for others to be deducted enough points for Jimmy to make it into the show...but, I wouldn't count on it. ^_^

After the Richmond race they should invert the field like they do in the Winston and have the last 10 drivers in the standings race for the championship. It makes just as much sense. :p :D

I have to admit that before the season and right up to about 4 weeks ago i wasn't liking the race to the championship. It sure has generated some excitement over the last few weeks. I have to change my thinking on the whole thing now, i'm leaning on liking the system. It will be very interesting how it plays out at Richmond and the last 10 races.
