Why, ABC?
by Jeff Gluck
From the just-my-opinion department come some things that bugged me about ABC’s broadcast of the Talladega race.
Usually, I’m at the track and don’t have to rely on TV to see what’s happening in the race. And thank goodness.
Unfortunately for fans, the media can’t relate to fan complaints about TV because reporters aren’t exposed to it – they are at the race. Therefore, there isn’t a huge firestorm about how much the broadcasts are lacking.
Here’s what bothered me the most:
– On the last lap, the cameras cut away from the leaders. When they returned, Jeff Gordon had already made the winning pass. Why would you show anything but the leaders on the last lap? ABC eventually showed it on replay after the race.
– What in the world is ABC thinking when it leaves the race telecast before interviewing any driver except the race winner? Every single fan wanted to know what Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart had to say about Gordon’s move.
– Similarly, why the heck would ABC go off-air without showing the final race results? Yes, they had it in a ticker at the top of the screen. But at least give the fans five seconds to see where their favorite driver stacked up.
– The number of commercials is ridiculous, and NASCAR should do something about that. Officials care about the ratings, and if they’re wondering why the numbers keep dropping, just look at the commercials. You can’t keep interrupting the broadcast or people will just give up and switch the channel.
– I wanted to mute the race announcers at times. Rusty Wallace, speaking about NASCAR’s pit road penalties, said something like, “The good thing is they’re always consistent.” What!? And Jerry Punch noted of Tony Raines, who has drastically underperformed, that “he’s been good all season.” Huh?!
