Why are modifieds not more popular?

I was excited to watch the modifieds Bristol race today. But then found out it's on Fox Sports 2, which I don't get.

Most likely, if the modifieds were more popular, they'd put it on FS1. Which got me wondering why the modifieds aren't more popular and haven't taken off nationally. Seems even most Nascar fans barely are aware they exist.

They're fast, often have great racing, and have a cool, interesting look to them. And they've had Nascar backing them for decades. Yet they've stayed at the level of small, regional series. Why is that?

How much of it is due to less surface area for advertising?

I love the modifieds. I go to more modified races than cup races every year.

Just be thankful they are on TV tonight. Most of their races aren't on national TV.
Fair point, but I'd be more thankful if they were on a channel I receive. I get most every channel, but not FS2. FS2 is in less than 40M households, so most people are in my situation it seems.

I was looking forward to it, but I cant be at the track til after 7 so Ill miss most of it.

When I was a kid I preferred stock bodied cars that looked like the cars on the street, I could cheer for my favorite brand. The sprint cars and modifieds have similar bodied cars on the track (the two types look different). I've grown to enjoy them more but there isn't the brand identification found on stock bodied cars so I'm guessing that's why they aren't as popular. (But then I've seen some stock bodied cars that were do banged up in the lower series that you couldn't tell what kind they were).

Because NASCAR has neglected them.

Sad but true :(

So very true.
First cars with p/s, Mods [or so I've been informed]
First cars that 'bump drafted' Mods
What's not to like about a 700 hp car weighing 2600 pounds with 12 inch wide tires and 4 w disk brakes? That at 120 mph can switch lanes faster than a woman's mind and stop on a dime and give the dime back?

No doubt true. But I wonder if there is something more structural. For example, compared to the trucks, the modifieds have two big disadvantages from a business perspective:
1) They aren't a consumer vehicle that average fans could look to buy. So no race on Sunday sell on Monday factor.
2) The open wheel aspect means much less surface area for sponsor advertisements.

Those two factors alone make it much less attractive for manufacturer and sponsor partners as a television property.

I think the modifieds racing is great. I was just trying to think of why Nascar hasn't been able sell that to a wider audience.

Mods offer balls to the wall pure racing. The only strategy is getting out front and staying there. No 'riding around biding our time' bs
They race every inch of every lap.

I'm not sure why. It's kinda sad that the Whelen tour is basically the Connecticut tour with big events sprinkled in. I don't know if it's that bad with the Southern tour.. It's one of my favorite forms of racing, it's just never really caught on..

I was always a fan of super mods\winged sprints myself. I think the reason they haven't caught on is because they're the last of small budget privateer racing. Owners just cant afford to travel across the country that much. By not having the same teams and drivers at all the races makes it a little harder to develop a following. The cup cars don't look like consumer vehicles, so I don't think that's it. The fact that the class isn't corporate driven, to me, is a plus. But at the same time I think it's harder to sell commercial time to advertisers because of that. I think that because they are small budget privateers is what makes the racing so good. Everybody on the track has a real chance to win. It seems that it's the kind of racing people would like to see, but corporations are more important to Nascar than fans are these days. Modifieds are to Nascar what the minor leagues are to baseball, a stepping stone to the big show. They may not be the big show, but are often the better show, IMO.

Twice a year @NHMS the Mod race is broadcast live. That is their Daytona The racing is the best of all the other racing on those weekends.4 more weeks till I'm back at Loudon for a week of camping and racing .

Honestly , I'm a Nascar fan . I rarely have time between taking my meds and laxatives to follow racing at Brobdingnagian like some folks do . Nothin wrong with the racin there , but I just don't have the time . One in a while , if it's on National TV ,and Ducks Unlimited isn't on , well I would give it a looksee. Used to , I would watch some of that stuff from Louden on TV before the Louden race. But then some cup guys went in it and I had to boycott.:(
