Why are the races so long?

It seems they would want shorter races so there is always competition instead of a bunch of guys driving around saving there car until the last 100 miles or so. I think it would be fun to have the WC guys run the amount of laps the CTS do. Then we would see exciting racing.

It's not all about speed and speed alone. Endurance and strategy also play parts. Otherwise, it'd be called drag racing.

Yep. If you want fast races, go to an NHRA event. 4.5 seconds and your done! :D

The reason CTS is so cool is because you don't have time to sit back a coast around. Ya need to get to the front as fast as you can. That's what is exciting.

The reason races are "so long" now is because in 1972 RJR insisted that all races of less than 250 miles and/or laps be stricken from the schedule and pressed for races of 400 miles/laps and greater.

Thus began the precious "Modern Era" and for those who complain of NASCAR selling out, the beginning of that as well.

More $$ out of the consumer, into the hands of the rich wihe guy

Truthfully I do not find the races too long. Nor would I find a 250 mile/lap race at short track too short.

Either one is, to me, a better test of man and machine than a 50 lap sprint. Like TWF said, more factors for both to consider.

I never fail to be impressed when during the course of one these events a team cand river can combine their knowledge and skill to take a very ho-hum car and work it until it becomes a winning combination. That simply doesn't happen as often in a sprint race.

It's because Dale Jr and MTV have signed a multi-billion dollar multi-decade contract with NASCAR guaranteeing him exposure and wins.

Goody, does this mean that helmets can now be worn backward and fire suits can be worn low on the hips, exposing 3" to 4" of nomex shorts......

Be still my heart, I think I'm going to faint. Imagine, just the thought of seeing Jimmy Spencer's shorts sends me hurling. :p :p

When the AAA (later USAC) ran the races at Indy they desided to race for 200 laps. The track being 2 1/2 miles made the race 500 miles. When Nascar started racing at Darlington (first super speedway) they wanted to imitate Indy so they made the race 500 miles long. When Daytona (tri-oval) was built it was made 2 1/2 miles to imitate Indy and the race was made 500 miles (200 laps). As other speedways were built the races were 500 miles long.
Later in the 70s & 80s because of the gas crisis some of the races were cut back to 400 miles to keep the government quite.
When RJR started sponsoring Most of the short tracks and dirt tracs were droped to cut the total races in a season back to a reasonable number.

The real reason the races ar 500 miles/laps is thats the longest the consesions stand can keep the hot dogs and beer stocked before they run out.
