why did atlanta change the track layout in 1997

They went from a oval to quad oval similar to Charlotte and texas

Any reason why?

Bruton Smith bought the place . Put in condos , suites, a ton of stands ,and the
tri oval so it would be as wildly successful as Charlotte. Problem was, the racing got
kinda boring except for the last 10 laps. Attendance continued to drop and Atlanta
lost a race. Now its best known for being the most worn out surface, so we got that
going for us!

The xfinity/truck races on 2 for 1 Saturday is of great value though
and I highly recommend that . The Cup cars practice that day as well.

I have been to races there, Atlanta, before and after the change, I like them both. Atlanta is wicked fast. Atlanta offers more passing opportunities than Charlotte, due to corner entry design and exit. ( all 1.5 mile tracks are NOT the same)
With the quad oval and tri oval design it gives better viewing of the cars from all angles from the grand stands on the front stretch where as before you could see only the tops of the cars as they came by. I like the tri/quad much better than straight oval on 1.5 mile courses. JMHO.

Better viewing angles given that the seats are on the frontstetech= you can charge people more money
Quad oval= a longer frontstretch than a traditional oval to sell higher quality/higher priced tickets.

I never got to go to a race before the change, but saw some races on TV with the old layout. Honestly, even has a 1.5 track, Atlanta has had, and can still have some really good races. I'm sad it only has one date now, and really sad it's during a cold cold part of the year so it's less likely I can ever really go.

The short answer why Atlanta was reconfigured was to maximize fans in the stands which is the reason for most of the cookie cutters. There was a time when Nascar could do anything and people would show up and watch from home and now no matter what they do they can't get nearly as many people to attend races or watch from home than in years past. Nascar is a good example of the phrase "you reap what you sow."

Atlanta doesn't have "cold cold" parts of the year. ;)

Relatively speaking, no. LOL
But I attended one of the last November races and sat in 25* ---- for this Texan, that's cold cold. :D
Not sure if it's still in effect, but when I went to Atlanta last year they had a "perfect weather guarantee", if it rained or if the high temp was less than 50 degrees the day of the race, you could exchange your ticket for a ticket to a future event at the speedway. Fortunately for us, it was sunny and about 65 that day.

I was there, it was a perfect day to race! :punkrocke

I like Atlanta, one of my favorite tracks. Wish it had a April/May date as well as a second date in the playoffs. The racing IMO , has always been exciting
