"AmeriCarna" on the Velocity channel. That is one fascinating program.

Who knew the very first road race in the US on a dedicated course was in 1906 --- the Vanderbilt Cup.

Saw Marty Robbins's #777 restored and driven at Nashville Speedway.

I've got to pay more attention to this channel.

I've never seen the channel. I don't know if I get it but will look.

I get it but never paid any attention to it, I'll pay more attention now.

The car that won the first Vanderbilt Cup was built by ALCO --- believe it or not, the American Locomotive Company. It was called
the Black Beast, and won races in Europe. It has been restored and runs. 680 cubic inches, 6 cylinders. The riding mechanic was responsible
for PUMPING the gas from the tank to the engine.
After just a few years, ALCO got out of the car building business --- but one of it's employees decided to keep on with cars -- Walter Chrysler. They
even took a look at his ORIGINAL, built to order car being restored. The thing is built out of wood, covered with sheet metal.

Ray Evernham is the producer and host.

Yep, I'll look at velocity more closely from now on. Thanks.

I've caught Americarna a few times and the stories about the cars and the people associated with them is what makes it interesting. In one episode Ray acquired two stock cars and told the stories about the people who made the cars and raced them; he preserved one (regional car that qualified for the Daytona 500) and he restored the other (a competitive car driven by country singer Marty Robbins at his local tracks). He showed a couple cheats on the car he is preserving (common and clever cheats from the day).

Tonight Ray bought the last "303" modified from it's owner/builder/driver Fred DMuchowski. Learned a lot about modified
racing in New Jersey. Ray got it going --- did NOT restore it --- and let Fred drive it around a dirt track. Turned out Fred only
lived 1.5 hours from Mooresville.

Great story.
