{If you are over sensative to criticism of the governing body, PLEASE SKIP THIS THREAD. If reading a discussion that may contain negative opinions of NASCAR's governing body [called NASCAR] will cause you to run about yelling at people to shut up, PLEASE SKIP THIS THREAD. You have been warned. If you lose sleep tonight, or soak your pillow with tears of frustration, DON'T BLAME ME.}

NASCAR used to be more of a SHOW about racing. There was a cast of characters racing hard and pissing each other off. They would get into it, but still have good finishes, and even wins, with bent up cars. They would beat and bang over racing room, give each other the finger, and show some real emotion. The wise ass comments and pit road mob scenes are a huge part of stock car lore. So much so, that NASCAR still uses clips from the '79 500, even though you'll never see that kind of emotion from todays drivers.

Now we have an aero package and respect and a gentlemans agreement not to really race until the boys at the top of the resume pyramid say it's go time. Where's the fight for racing room? Gone, because the slightest dent will ruin your precious aero package and send you back 15 spots. How pathetic is it that self described full contact racing has come to this? Why do we have side pipes cutting down tires after the slightest contact? Why do we have cars that get destroyed just running through the grass?

I know. I know. The school marms will tell me to just change the channel. I can't. I still hold onto the hope that one day some hard nosed, full contact racing will break out so I wont feel like I'm watching an F1 race with fenders.

Please Brian, slow the cars down, rip out the aero package and bring back mechanical grip. The Nationwide races have much more contact and hard racing these days, because they can do it without killing someones day. Please Brian, define have at it. Let drivers tussle on pit road without the fear of fines, but come down hard for actually throwing punches. Let drivers use subtle payback and contact on the track, but draw a clear line between bumping someone up the track to brush the wall, and slamming a guy so hard you take the wheel out of his hands. Come down hard on the nuts so the rest of the field doesn't have to worry about putting their life on the line for racing with a little have at it attitude.

I agree with many of your points, FB. The difficult thing is that once you learn something you can't unlearn it. The teams know so much about aero and the advantages of a good aero package that I don't think it's possible to keep them from looking for aero advantages.

As far as the beating and banging, it's all up to the drivers. They choose not to do it. "Boy's have at it" has actually created a self policing environment where drivers are afraid to do anything for fear of pay back. The stuff the Carl did to Brad and what Brian Vickers did to Tony are 2 good examples.

How do you slow down the cars? Put on restrictor plates?

Also, I think people get nostalgic for racing that never really existed. Some of those old races were boring as hell. Of course the highlight reels make it seem like it was just constant excitement but it wasn't.

Aero is nothing new to this sport and certainly nothing new with the current COT type vehicle. From the first time that they realized that an advantage could be gained it was then taken advantage of. It'll continue to be that way until the last NASCAR race is run.

Huh? The aero PACKAGE is the splitter and the spoiler. Aero ADVANTAGES are what Chad got in trouble for.

That would be my point. If NASCAR would....well, I said it already.

See Aero package. Without the spliter or spoiler, they would slow down plenty. I would go as far as having a smaller super speedway engine instead of the RP.

That's a silly statement that attempts to discredit what I said. It's not racing that never existed. Are you kidding me? Anyone who has watched NASCAR for more than 10 years knows the racing has changed. Yes, some of the old races were boring, but many were super exciting for the reasons I listed. Have doubts? NASCAR doesn't, because they still run clips from the '79 500.

I won't lie FB, when I saw the title of this thread I thought you were gonna be complaining about how NASCAR is out to screw over Brad =P

They already have. He wins Bristol, and they change the timing lines. Still he wins, so they talk about ripping up the track. They can't hold that goofy kid down forever! ;)

I agree Matt .Anyone who thinks the competition today isn't a hundred times tighter is crazy. Just try picking the winners each week in the pool.Back in the day , there were only three or four cars with a ligitimate shot and some of them broke. This back in the day crap is crap. Yes there were personalities and yes there was some beatin and bangin (often the cars weren't on the same lap) but thankfully there are personalities and beatin and bangin today . What we need to do is stop asking Nascar to penalize the stuff that makes it great. The Busch Bros ,Bad Brad , Cousin Carl , etc . are a throw back to the old days. They are what's important.

When I first noticed this thread I said to myself, that sounds like something FB would create. Then I looked at the author's name and, well, is what I said. :D

However, after reading the OP, I tend to agree with some of your statements - not 100% of them, but some.

As has been said, we can't turn back time. We can't unlearn what we know. We will never see NA$$CAR racing be like it was "back in the day". The days of the shadetree mechanic building a car, driving it to the track, competing in a race and driving it home afterwards are long gone - at least in the big-money corporate-led NA$$CAR of today

What you just said is what I like about dirt late model racing. You still see a lot of that today in that form of racing.

This post gets my vote for the best post in this thread!

NASCAR racing today is a 100 times better than it ever was "Back in The Day" butt "fans" bitch 100 times louder :(

What pisses me off about NASCAR is their insistence on doing an invocation before each race. Save that crap for your church.

A race track is a sacred place that is open to everyone who wants to worship. You really need to convert and find the faith Matthew. ;)

They do invocations at every major league sports event I've been to, except for the Baltimore Orioles where they don't sing "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" either.

:bsflag:

There has never been a before-game prayer at any professional sporting event that I have been to - except Auto Racing!

They perform the National Anthem but...

Maybe you are just confusing Obama with God and so you think that God Bless America is sung in honor of His Holiness... :D

I have no doubt that the invocation will always exist. I never watch it on TV but I can't avoid it at the track. But I never stand or remove my hat until the national anthem. :)

I wonder how many teams will upgrade their weather radar equipment. All of us knew that pitting during the rain caution was stupid and we aren't all that bright.

Keep that up and you might just end up with a boot up your tail.

They do it in the NFL. They do it at EVERY local track I've been to. They do it at my local ballpark. So take your :bsflag: and shove it.

"...we say grace and we say ma'am, if you ain't into that we don't give a damn..."
BTW, Robby, you missed out on some cold beer and awesome burgers, brats and dogs :D

I have been to hundreds of NFL games, thousands of baseball games, thousands of basketball games, dozens of hockey games, many swimming and water polo competitions and I have attended thousands of motor races.

The ONLY time I can remember a pre-event prayer is at a motor race.

So, Andy...

I am sure I did! But the thing I missed most was being able to meet you. Sorry it didn't work out this time! Hopefully, there will be more opportunities down the road.

Are you planning on attending the Long Beach Grand Prix??
