Bruton Smith after the new surface was put down at Bristol that he'd tear the place up again if the fans didn't like it. Judging from all the comments I've seen from the fans and the empty seats, it appears the fans are speaking loud and clear. The question is will Bruton do what he said he'd do and tear it up and make the banking like it was before?

I think it would be a mistake to do that, at least now they can race, personally I think any track a half mile or smaller is best left to the Modifieds or other classes. Too small for big, heavy, Cup cars.

I guess I'm in the minority here. I like the racing at Bristol. At least it's racing now and not having to wreck someone to get around them.

But why is the previous Bristol where you had to turn someone around to get by the only alternative people talk about? It was just fine in the '80s before they switched it to concrete. I say Bruton should tear it up again, forget about the concrete and go back to the original design. But, I'm not one to take Bruton's word for much of anything, so I'd bet he leaves it alone.

You didn't have to wreck someone before. Just give them a slight tap and you could pass them. Either that or just get beside someone and get a better run off the turn on the inside.

the racin was much better when it was asphalt, but in the summer (night race) it was prone to potholes that is why they put the concrete down, with today's tech. they should have an asphalt the would stand up to the down force in the corners. as for the progressive banking i am torn there is more actual racing however there is less excitement so i guess its a catch 22, i have been to BMS and seen 100+ laps of caution not fun then again back in the day i've seen some of the best racing i have ever seen there.

IMO, the people that are negative about something tend to be vocal while those that are alright with something tend to keep their thoughts to themselves. That said it is easy to listen to the masses complaining and think they are the majority.

I like the racing at Bristol just fine and I have been going to Bristol since it had concrete bleachers.

Heck, you may just be that guy that was sitting at the other end of my near empty row this past weekend. :beerbang:

I agree completely with your post. Still though..... There were many empty seats. I don't think that is in any way all attributable to the new surface. I can only speak for my little group of friends that quit going and that was entirely economical. It's an investment to go to one of these events. I don't know if you camp but if you did last weekend, you probably saw many empty spaces there as well. It costs quite a bit to drive or haul an RV to one of these events. There are people out there that can't go because of this reason, not because they don't want to be there. My family has cut two of our favorite tracks out of our schedule this year. Not because we no longer like the track, it's simple economics for some of us. That's going to translate to 12 seats not filled over those three races that we've decided not to attend. Add in more families like mine and that becomes quite noticeable at these venues.

GAH your stealing my thoughts:D

You are correct about the surface, I remember the Asphalt days( albiet tape delayed on vhs tape cause I didn't have cable). Drivers used the whole racing surface and not just the bottem.

Concrete or not it just isn't the same without the old banking. It seems like passing is limited to the inside only. As far as empty seats I blame this economy more than anything. Even the way it is now I would galdly attend a race there if I could afford it.
Just my opinion.

What made Bristol the biggest ticket on the circuit? We can name a bunch of incidents that we can recall and of course, Dale Earnhardt probably was in most of those memories. I remember many years ago, I took a ride in a traveling simulator here in Winston Salem. It was just the wife and I who stepped in and so we had the whole show to ourselves, so we took the front row. There were three different races, first was a hydroplane race...plenty of water splashed that we saw but didn't feel. Then if I recall correctly came a sprint car race and finally, a Winston Cup race, obviously from Bristol. Our car (the one with the camera) started on the inside of the second row. We didn't know what car we were riding in, but at that track, in the simulator, you're always thrown to the right. (Nice for cuddling) Anyway, Rick Mast driving the #1 car took the lead on the first lap and our car followed him into second place, on his bumper for many laps. Finally, our driver spun Rick out and the caution came out. In those days, drivers could hit pit road quickly and our driver quickly ducked into the pits. We both laughed outloud when our driver slid into the pit of the #3.

I used to always argue with non-racing fans who would say that the only reason people watch racing is to see the wrecks. While I do love to watch close and exciting racing, there is a lot of truth in what they said. I dare say there are few people who would say that the caution free race is exciting, but on the other hand, those same people would say they don't want to see carnage on the track. Just like baseball or any other stick and ball sport, you never know when a grand slam is hit, or a 75 yard bomb for a touchdown, or a last second bucket is made to win a close game in basketball. I might say that I don't want to see wrecks in a race, its always the most exciting when what I'm watching is on the very edge and anything can happen. And what makes it even more exciting is when the driver that I dislike the most is involved and is a victim, regardless of who is at fault. Bristol Motor Speedway used to have those moments more than just about any other track on the circuit. But now the drivers can race each other without the threat of being taken out. Yes, its great to see a couple of cars go lap after lap, side by side, before one of them eventually takes the lead or gets in front of the other and while that is exciting, its nothing compared to seeing the guy in the back, trying lap after lap to get by what he believes to be the slower car. That is what made Bristol the hottest ticket in town.

Bruton had a little press conference yesterday afternoon. Some of what was said on random topics including the current Bristol configuration.....

Bruton Smith says he has no plans to change Bristol back to the way it used to be.

Bruton Smith says he believes Bayne and Wood Brothers will find a way into All-Star race. BS "Ford wants them in it."

Bruton and Marcus Smith say CMS and Ford have actively been looking for something to help Trevor Bayne and Wood Brothers into All-Star race.

Bruton Smith says Kentucky will be a "complete sell out" AND he may even lease another 20k seats to meet demand.
