The brother-in-law of champion NASCAR stock car racer Jimmie Johnson died in a freak skydiving accident Sunday after he collided with another jumper in midair and then failed to deploy his parachute during freefall in eastern San Diego County, Calif., officials said.

Jordan Janway, 27, a veteran skydiving instructor and brother of Johnson’s wife, Chandra Janway Johnson, was training other employees of Skydive San Diego at the time and may have been knocked unconscious during a tandem maneuver that went horribly wrong.

Damn, that sounds terrible. RIP.

To answer the question, no. Martinsville '04 was a huge tragedy for the entire organization and JJ drove incredibly well afterwards, and that's when he was a lot younger.

Regardless of how many jumps someone has, they should NEVER be allowed to jump without the chip that automatically deploys your chute at a certain altitude.

Agreed.

RIP. I think Johnson will drive like he always does.

Poor Chandra and family. I hope Jimmie and family remain strong. Thoughts and prayers go out to all of them.

Terrible.. heard about this last night... it sucks... not sure it will affect JJ on track though. But who knows how close they were...

Jimmie can shut the rest of the world down when the helmut goes on. I frankly am just hopeful that the NASCAR media hacks leave him alone. Yeah right. I believe that as good of a driver he is, it appears (stressing appears because how the hell would I know) that he is a better family man. Leave him the hell alone. My condolences to Jimmie and his family.

Sad news indeed. I'm sure Jimmie will be racing with a heavy heart this weekend, but I don't think his performance will be affected any.
