Jeff Gordon has to be viewed as a favorite this weekend at Infineon Raceway, but that's not what's on his mind right now.

The four-time NASCAR Cup champion and his wife, Ingrid Vandebosch, are on "baby watch" with the arrival of their daughter expected any day now. Veteran Mark Martin is on standby to fill in for Gordon, if needed, in Hendrick Motorsports' No. 24 Chevrolet.

Whether or not Gordon leaves for the birth is a matter of timing.

"It depends on when the baby is born," Gordon said. "If she is born on Wednesday, then I'll have a day and a half with her and Ingrid before heading west. If she is born on Thursday or Friday, then that would change things significantly.

"If she's born during the race on Sunday, then I'll see her when I get home. There's not a lot I can do about that, but I hope that doesn't happen."

Gordon is a master of this road course and has a series-leading five victories there. He also has nine top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 14 starts at the track. Adding to his advantage is the usage of the car of tomorrow in this weekend's race, NASCAR's new model in which Hendrick Motorsports has dominated.

Still, it's not just the performance at the track that stands out in his mind. A year ago, Gordon announced his engagement at this track.

"Last year was an incredible weekend," he said. "To announce my engagement to Ingrid [Vandebosch], and then to win the race was amazing.

"But this weekend could be even more special, and it won't even take a win to do that."

I wish him luck this weekend I mean Jeff Gordon is not my favorite driver but I much rather would like to see him win before someone other than Truex Jr or Dale Jr or the M&M's car. If he misses this weekends race, he'll probably still make the chase anyway. I'm sure alot of drivers wouldn't mind seeing as how he's been the dominant driver on that track over the years.

well he has a 270 point lead...you get 185 for winning....he can skip the whole weekend and still have a 50 something point lead.

I do believe that the due date is the 24th so it would be great if Jeff G won on the same day the baby is due.
The daughter of the #24, winner at Sonoma, born on the 24th!:bounce:

I hope that Jeff races on Sunday. Any man worth his salt would tell his wife to put the baby on hold until after the race. I know that is what Buckaroo and BP would do. :D

I can see it now on lap 50 he gets a call that she's going into labor 98 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. It takes about 5 laps to get mark martin ready. They decide they are going to do the switch on lap 57. as soon as lap 56 comes making the race official BOOM!!! a freak thunderstorm comes and He wins a rain shortened race in a place where it hasnt rained in june in 50 years and he leaves. :XXROFL:

On a serious note I wish all health and happiness to Mom Dad and baby gordon...

You know they can do that.
I wonder if he could have the doctors give Ingrid a coma inducing drug until the season was over. Don't need some rug rat getting in the way of the Drive for Five.
