Jeff Gordon has to be viewed as a favorite this weekend at Infineon Raceway, but that's not what's on his mind right now.
The four-time NASCAR Cup champion and his wife, Ingrid Vandebosch, are on "baby watch" with the arrival of their daughter expected any day now. Veteran Mark Martin is on standby to fill in for Gordon, if needed, in Hendrick Motorsports' No. 24 Chevrolet.
Whether or not Gordon leaves for the birth is a matter of timing.
"It depends on when the baby is born," Gordon said. "If she is born on Wednesday, then I'll have a day and a half with her and Ingrid before heading west. If she is born on Thursday or Friday, then that would change things significantly.
"If she's born during the race on Sunday, then I'll see her when I get home. There's not a lot I can do about that, but I hope that doesn't happen."
Gordon is a master of this road course and has a series-leading five victories there. He also has nine top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 14 starts at the track. Adding to his advantage is the usage of the car of tomorrow in this weekend's race, NASCAR's new model in which Hendrick Motorsports has dominated.
Still, it's not just the performance at the track that stands out in his mind. A year ago, Gordon announced his engagement at this track.
"Last year was an incredible weekend," he said. "To announce my engagement to Ingrid [Vandebosch], and then to win the race was amazing.
"But this weekend could be even more special, and it won't even take a win to do that."
