Will This Be A Problem In 2012

Helton doesn't expect short fields: There are 32 cars participating in this test at Daytona International Speedway. That number does not include some teams that folded during the offseason (such as Red Bull), some smaller outfits (such as Front Row Motorsports) and some that decided not to test (such as JTG Daugherty Racing). [NASCAR President Mike] Helton said he didn't think the number of teams participating in the test portended short fields for the regular season. "I think there is a good deal more activity out there than is represented by testing and some of the other things," he said, "and the fact that there will be in excess of 43 cars trying to make the Daytona 500 ... and we've been through cycles, particularly when we get to the June, July stretch, where we may only have 43 cars show up at the race track. But I don't see us going below 43 this year. I may be surprised, but I think just knowing the chatter and the conversations that we've had with race teams and organizations that either have participated or are going to participate, that we'll have full fields."(NASCAR.com)(1-14-2012)

Bet he still believes in the Easter Bunny too.

There won't be a problem filling the field for Daytona but come mid season na$car will be paying S&P'ers to show up.

Raced much of the 90's and earlier with 30 something cars, so what's the big deal?

No big deal as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather see the cars that are out there racing anyhow. That being said, I still don't see the fields being short when 43rd pays what it does.

Queue the post to tell us about the television contract having to have a 43 car field.

You need to read my post NOW I REMEMBER

I can't remember the last time there were 43 cars that started a cup race and all 43 of each of them had a chance of winning the race.

Seriously? Even considering that several teams only bought one set of tires.

i'm very serious. i've never seen a cup race where everyone had a chance of winning outside of dega and daytona. there have been good fields but there has always been mid or back of the pack cars. not s&p but just short equipment/talent wise.

I think that is true of all sports .I hope that Tommy Baldwins' of this world keep showing up even if they don't win . I will still be pulling for them to get a top 10 or a top 20. It's really great when Hendrick and Roush don't win every race. Maybe the Wood Bros. can win another race , even if they don't run them all.:beerbang:

Agreed.

I am not even sure about Dega or Daytona though.

You never know, one of these days, one of these smaller teams can pull one out.

Robby Gordon's almost pulled a few out for smaller teams. Regan Smith's win at Darlington. I'd like to see one of the smaller teams flip the script next year.

It would be great to see an also-ran get a win or two. KuBu and Smith have opportunities to do that in 2012.

But I would rather see a field of 35 cars that were planning on going the distance than to fill the field with 8 or 10 guys who were just there to get appearance money.

The so-called best series in NASCAR (the Truck Series) only has like 15 cars running at the end.

Yep , then we get back into the argument of deciding who is an 'also ran' and who is a 'start and park' . Everyone has his own ideas. Hope they don't end up throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

DEFINITIONS

Also-Ran: A team that finishes between 20th place to 35th place on a regular basis, and is happy with the result - and happy with the fact that they were not a DNF.

Start and Park: A team that runs minimal laps and is happy with an official finish of 35th or worse on a regular basis, cause there is money to be made by just starting a CUP race.

That's MY interpretation... ;)

Golly, you guys seemed to have forgotten who won last year's Daytona 500. Oh yeah, he was in the famed 21 car and it was pretty much a Roush car, but the team was and still is a second tier team. Daytona and Talladega...anything can happen and many times does.

Ah Watson ..there's the rub.Are they REALLY happy ?:p

There'll be 43 cars at every race. Small teams will go when they see they have a garuanteed start, big teams will start an extra car with a pick-up driver. They all carry a back-up car to the track, they'll use it even if it's just used as a FREE TEST session.

There u go

I Hope we do have only 40 cars show up just to see what happens

There will be 43

I think it would go entirely unnoticed as far as the product on the track. Those three that would have been there probably wouldn't have been on the track anyhow after lap #15.

Like the rest of you I've been to many races and I've watched many races on TV and I can't say that I've ever been concerned about the car count. It's nothing more than a number and unless one of those back-markers takes out a contender or blocks someone in the pits, you'd never know they're there. They could run 35 or 43, IMO it wouldn't make a difference whatsoever.

;) Actually there's several tracks that it would be a Much Better race if the feild was limited to about 30 cars Bristol, Martinsville and Indy.

The truck series is the one to be concerned about. They'll be lucky to have 30 trucks at Daytona.
