Winchester Speedway closes shop for 2004 season; ARCA RE/MAX Series alters schedule

TOLEDO OH (10-31-03) ARCA RE/MAX Series officials, upon receiving the news that Winchester Speedway will not be open for business next year, have altered the 2004 schedule.

“We’re certainly proud of the many improvements we were able to bring to Winchester Speedway over the last half-dozen years or so,” said track owner/promoter Charlie Shaw. “However, the improvements came at great expense, so we have decided to take a year off and re-evaluate our long term plans for the future before we make any more decisions. Anyway, we’re going to regroup, take 2004 off, and see what happens for 2005.”

As a replacement for the Saturday night, September 4 Winchester race, RE/MAX Series officials have inserted a Friday night, September 3 event at Toledo Speedway.

“We’re certainly disappointed we won’t be going to Winchester in 2004,” said ARCA President Ron Drager. “The show had grown over the years into one of our finest short-track programs, but the business climate is continually changing, so we change with it. Charlie (Shaw) has done a lot for Winchester Speedway. We feel fortunate to be an important part of the track’s history, and of course, we wish Charlie and the speedway well.”

In switching the race event from Saturday to Friday, ARCA RE/MAX Series teams will have an extra travel day en route to the Monday, September 6 Labor Day event at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds in DuQuoin, Illinois.

Winschester for those who don't know is a high banked 1/2 mile track in east central Indiana that has help very good racing as well as a marching band contest every summer. The track has been open and running for many years, not exactly sure how long. Winchester is a big part of racing history in Indiana, and I hope the owners open it back up in 2005 or sell it to someone who will open it back up and maybe bring the trucks here!

I love watching the races at Winchester. That is a wicked little 1/2 mile beauty. Takes guts to run up close to that wall.

Sure hope it can re-open in 2005.

Bummer i just watched a race on Speed not too long ago from Winchester, the Hooters Pro-Cup. I also watched the ARCA race, too bad that is a cool track , but it deperately needs to be re-surfaced. :(

Shame, I hate to see the smaller tracks close shop. Hopefully, someone will re-open it.

Winchester opened in 1916 and the first ARCA race was run there in 1964.
Lots of racing history there, lots of pretty famous drivers raced there over the years.

Surely hope the track reopens in 2005; would hate to see the place closed for good.

One of the best Short Tracks around! I hope this place can open back up soon!!!
