From the Motorsports TV site:
For the last few weeks the NASCAR ratings on NBC and TNT are turning in some big-time bumps over last year. NASCAR is on a four-race winning streak, with increases at Indy (+2%), Watkins Glen (+13%), Michigan (+26%), and Bristol (+17%).
These last three weeks must have Dick Ebersol, Mark Lazarus, and Paul Brooks downright giddy. The average increase for the last three Winston Cup broadcasts is a whopping 19% over last year. To the average viewer numbers like that may not mean much. But in the world of TV sports, they are amazing.
There is no easy explanation for the ratings explosion. From February to July, NASCAR had been up and down from last year, with no recognizable trend. In fact, before things turned around with a 2% increase at the Brickyard, NASCAR was on a five-week losing streak. Then, all of a sudden, the ratings are skyrocketing.
NASCAR's biggest test comes starts on September 15, when it's the first head-to head battle with the NFL juggernaut. September 22 will be the first weekend when year-to-year comparisons can be made on an NFL Sunday. Then, NBC's biggest worry on Sunday afternoons will no longer be Tiger Woods.
