From the Motorsports TV site:

For the last few weeks the NASCAR ratings on NBC and TNT are turning in some big-time bumps over last year. NASCAR is on a four-race winning streak, with increases at Indy (+2%), Watkins Glen (+13%), Michigan (+26%), and Bristol (+17%).

These last three weeks must have Dick Ebersol, Mark Lazarus, and Paul Brooks downright giddy. The average increase for the last three Winston Cup broadcasts is a whopping 19% over last year. To the average viewer numbers like that may not mean much. But in the world of TV sports, they are amazing.

There is no easy explanation for the ratings explosion. From February to July, NASCAR had been up and down from last year, with no recognizable trend. In fact, before things turned around with a 2% increase at the Brickyard, NASCAR was on a five-week losing streak. Then, all of a sudden, the ratings are skyrocketing.

NASCAR's biggest test comes starts on September 15, when it's the first head-to head battle with the NFL juggernaut. September 22 will be the first weekend when year-to-year comparisons can be made on an NFL Sunday. Then, NBC's biggest worry on Sunday afternoons will no longer be Tiger Woods.

Most of the big ratings are coming from people hearing about the tempers and big ones on the news so they try to catch it thats why races like bristol get the most ratings Im sure talladega and others are up there with it

Interesting observations, but

Bristol rated lower than

Daytona (July race)
Chicago
Pocono
Indy
Watkins Glen
Michigan

As a matter of fact the only race in the second half of the season that rated lower than Bristol was New Hampshire.

Awesome_ What does money have to do with fans tuning in? Are they getting paid to watch?

More households now have cable, dish and multiple tvs, but who's to say that the Neilson people aren't tweaking? Or is that those ratings are even coming from Neilson?

Those ratings are coming from Neilson.

If the Neilson folks were ever ever caught tweaking the numbers they would be out of business so fast even their memory would be gone. Those numbers are used by sponsors all across the country for estabishing advert rates, to twek them, especially up, would mean billions of dollars. Just ain't happening.

Are you trying to say that more folks are not watching??

What would having cable have to do with ratings for NBC??

HS, I live in/near a large city but reception without cable/dish/etc.is sooooooooooo bad nobody would even be able to watch the news, let alone a race. This includes rural, mountainous, remote and even valley communities. PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

It's a real shame that Bristol's ratings weren't higher. Was that because it was on TNT this year, or because it was on a Saturday night and most people don't watch a lot of television on Saturday nights?
