MILLINGTON, Tenn. (AP) -- A lack of sponsorship didn't hurt Jon Wood's effort, and he won his first career pole Friday for the NASCAR truck series race at Memphis Motorsports Park.
The best previous qualifying result for Wood was a fourth-place start last month at Lowe's Motor Speedway. He's competing on a race-to-race basis, and hopes the performance will help his team find a sponsor for remainder of the season.
"It's an unfortunate situation we're in," Wood said after locking up the top starting position for Saturday's O'Reilly 200 in a Roush Racing Ford.
Wood's fast lap on the three-quarter-mile oval was 117.407 mph. He'll start inside the Dodge of Chad Chaffin, whose best previous qualifying effort in the Craftsman Truck series was sixth. Chaffin got around in 117.223.
Ted Musgrave qualified third in a Dodge, followed by the Chevrolet of defending race champion Travis Kvapil.
Carl Edwards, Wood's teammate, whose truck also is unsponsored, completed the top five. Edwards finished second and Wood third in the most recent race, on June 6 at Texas Motor Speedway.
The pole was the first for Roush Racing since Oct. 28, 2000, when Kurt Busch was the fastest qualifier at California Speedway. Wood was pleasantly surprised with his performance.
"We thought we were pretty good in practice," he said. "But I didn't think we were that good."
Rick Crawford, Jason Leffler, series points leader Bobby Hamilton, 2001 Memphis winner Dennis Setzer and Terry Cook rounded out the top 10 among the 36 qualifiers for the series' 200th race.
