Just finished watching an awesome start to the season (as many of you know, I end up watching it throughout the week over here!).
Wasn't sure what to think of the stage stuff - didn't like the fact they then went to cautions straight after instead of doing like in that Cycling Race whereby you get the points but continue at full speed. I see why they've done it but it seems a bit gimicky.
Enjoyed having a few wrecks throughout - you know me: a new fan that likes a few big shunts! (Sorry!)
However, one thing I loved about NASCAR was that cars could be in big wrecks, get patched up and throughout the race gain back laps in order to finish high up - anyway, I'll live with changes.
However, bizarrely enough I mostly enjoyed the Albert Hitchcock style suspense built up once Logano shot to the back and left the train of 11 cars up top...
And we waited...and waited...and waited...and waited...until lap 197 (?) when all hell broke loose!!
What a fab finish and I realised how much I'd enjoyed it when I realised I had a huge goofy grin on my face. It was so nice for Busch (not been a fan of his before TBH) to get his first 500 win and for that big fat guy in the pits to win his home race and get teary.
I then enjoyed seeing Blaney not happy: not because I don't like him, but it reminded me about how passionate and dogged these (you) NASCAR lot are about simply winning - and 2nd/3rd won't do at all.
The whole race reminded me of how much I enjoy watching the chess-style steady moving about within the 30-pack draft - seeing how cars can move up and down within laps - fascinating and rare in most sports. Hero to zero for Elliot and Larson within laps.
And finally, for Old Boy Waltrip to get 8th is just crazy!!
Here's to my second full season of NASCAR being just as crazily awesome as this race was!
