Waltrip's crew chief suspended: David Hyder, the crew chief for Michael Waltrip, has been suspended indefinitely for infractions discovered on the #55 Toyota during Sunday's post-qualifying inspection for the Daytona 500. Further penalties against Waltrip's team will be announced at a press conference later on Wednesday. They are expected to be more severe than the two- and four-race suspensions of crew chiefs from four other teams that were announced on Tuesday. NASCAR chairman Brian France and president Mike Helton were among those that met with Waltrip and officials from Michael Waltrip Racing before Wednesday's first practice session. One official described the situation as "very serious." Lee White, the senior vice president for Toyota Racing Development that is making its Nextel Cup debut at Daytona, said he also planned to meet with Waltrip. "I wouldn't call it a setback, but it's disappointing for anyone that we partner with to have this happen in some form or fashion," he said. "We will talk with them to see where we need to go for the future." White said TRD has been working with NASCAR on the situation. "I can honestly tell you from an ethics standpoint and integrity, along with character and honesty, those things are paramount in our company," he said. "We hold ourselves to a high standard and we hold our teams to high standards. We hope we've picked the right ones.
 
It will be interesting to see how Toyota handles this situation. They obviously chose Michael Waltrip to represent them because of his reputation as a good guy and a marketing success. I wonder how this attention will effect his image and therefore Toyota's image. :blink:

IS that a typo?? I had heard nothing about any post qualifying.. In any event if you do the crime...be prepared to do the time..
Doesn't indefinitely mean "see ya, You aren't welcome back here."
I am on pins and needles to know what the end result will be.

Michael Waltrip is garbage anyways, Im not surprised he cheated. Here's to him being suspended for the first 5 races. :beerbang:

UPDATE: SPEED is reporting an announcement is coming this afternoon, could be as soon as the last Cup practice of the day is run [around 3:00pm/et], hearing another report that the 'substance' could be jet fuel.(2-14-2007)

Interesting..ummm he wants to fly?

At approximately 2:10 p.m., (Daytona Beach time) NASCAR escorted Bobby Kennedy, Michael Waltrip Racing team manager, out of the garage area. No word yet on the fate of Michael Waltrip -- whether he will be allowed to race in the Twin Duel 150 races or not. He is suited up and ready to practice should he get the nod. I will not be surprised to hear a pure and simple whitewash! Something like we couldn't tell what it was but it had no business in there so we kicked the two guys responsible out and the owner/driver is innocent and will have no penality.... After all it IS Mikey.

Must be a very serious penalty. Ol' DW must be workin on an ulcer making trip and will probably pitch a FIT!

Michael Waltrip's qualifying time disallowed from Sunday's Daytona 500 qualfiying.
The substance was NOT jet fuel. Waltrip will be allowed to run the Gatorade Duel's in a back up car.(SPEED coverage of the NASCAR press conference). Scott Eggleston will be the interim crew chief for Waltrip. Eggleston won the Daytona 500 with Waltrip in 2001.(2-14-2007)
NASCAR Release: NASCAR announced Wednesday that it has confiscated the primary car of the #55 Toyota team that competes in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series with driver Michael Waltrip, as a result of rule violations found during pre- and post-qualifying inspection for the Daytona 500. Crew chief Larry (David) Hyder and the team’s vice president of competition Bobby Kennedy have been ejected from this week’s events at Daytona International Speedway and suspended indefinitely. Hyder also has been fined $100,000.
NASCAR also penalized Waltrip with the loss of 100 driver championship points. His qualifying time from pole day on Feb. 11 was disallowed. Team owner Elizabeth (Buffy) Waltrip has been penalized 100 car owner championship points.
The actions taken by NASCAR resulted from violations of 12- 4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4-Q (car, car parts components and/or equipment not conforming to NASCAR rules) and 20-15.2C (gasoline must not be blended with alcohols, ethers or other oxygenates).
The confiscated car and the parts related to the violations will be transported to the NASCAR Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. for further inspection. NASCAR said the investigation of the confiscated car is ongoing.(NASCAR PR)(2-14-2007)

WOW :eek: NASCAR is playing hardball!
I've always liked Mikey, I find him entertaining, and I wished him well with his new Toyota deal...yet somehow I'm not surprised at this. I think Mikey is still trying to compete in the anything goes, bend the rules until they break NASCAR world of years ago...
 
I'm not fond of trash talking here people. The corner is only a few mouseclicks away and i'm not afraid to use it.
 
Ok before this gets to be an out right Bash Mikey thread...how is this any different than The 48 deal last year???? Teams cheat all the time, especially at Daytona where the pressure to make the race is huge. Nascar will do the right thing and suspend the right people, as for not letting Mikey drive in the 500, i don't think that would of ever happened unless he doesn't do well in the 150s. I don't find this unusual, the cheating, but the Jet Fuel...that's a good one. Seems to me that would cook an engine pretty quick or at least burn a piston, anyway my guy got caught too. So Mikey isn't the only cheat.
 
Since his time has been disallowed and he is starting at the back of the pack...I would put some real good money on him missing the 500!!;)
I understand jet fuel is oily and slow burning. Doubtful it would help a nascar engine at all.

conference said it was NOT jet fuel... (jet fuel also contains nitromethane, you'd know if that was going through a cup car). Nascar now said that it will take mikey 2 21st place finishes to make up the fine. Which, in mikey's world, should be sometime around texas.

The two key words to answer your question. AND, I do believe that Nascar set a precedence with Knaus's penalty and stated that anyone else caught trying anything like it would pay a stiffer penalty.

That is, IF my memory serves me correctly. ;)
 
Magnet, I gave RobbyGFan an infraction for the attack. First time for me, but it won't be the last I'm sure.

Any time you can keep a Kennedy away from anything that is a good start. I had heard Mikey was hanging around with people who were bad news, but I had no idea he was hanging around with the Kennedys :eek:

I just hope he doesn't let any of them drive any of the race cars. That would have to be a blonde's worst nightmare :P

RIGHT, WHOS TRASH, GOOD LUCK WISHING R. GORDON GETTING IN THE 500 AS WELL, BUT HEY YOU CAN ATLEAST WATCH HIM RACE IN THE DAKAR RALLY OR BAJA 1000.

As someone who was kind of rooting for the Toyota teams to do well (even though I was disappointed MWR is their flagship) I have to say this doesn't bode well for their popularity, but it looks like they found some speed in the fourth qual session. I'm going to keep an eye on blaney tomorrow...if there are any toyota drivers I'd like to see do well, he's the one.

I was to lazy to read evetyhting on here, but i seen on a head line on Yahoo he had jet fuel in his car?
