WEST COVINA, Calif. (AP) -- A man deliberately cut himself with saws in the aisles of a Home Depot Inc. store in suburban Los Angeles on Wednesday, creating a gruesome scene in front of several customers that left him severely injured, police said.
The man was in the store's tool section and went unnoticed until he began grabbing several small saws, including one meant to cut sheet rock, and started using them on his arms.
"He cut both arms with hand saws down to the bone," said West Covina police Cpl. Rudy Lopez.
Officers received several 911 calls and arrived to find the man lying unconscious in the aisle in a pool of blood.
An off-duty paramedic from the Pasadena Fire Department had been shopping nearby and hurried to the scene.
"The officers had already found the man down, face down, blood all over the store, multiple aisles, and the whole store is in chaos," the paramedic, Art Hurtado, told KNBC-TV.
Hurtado thought the man was dead but when he checked he found breath and a slight pulse and said he thought to himself, "I can save this guy."
With help from police and store employees, Hurtado collected rope and rags from store shelves and put makeshift tourniquets on both arms, most likely saving the man's life, police said.
"Were we in a good place for it? No, but you improvise," Hurtado said. "If I didn't have rope I'd have used my shoelaces. We would have made it work."
The man was in surgery hours after the incident, said Lopez, who knew no more about his condition.
The man, who looked to be in his 40s, was carrying no identification, has been unable to answer questions, and was not heard saying anything in the store, so police do not know his name or why he cut himself, Lopez said.
Police interviewed about five people who said they saw what happened, and Lopez said there were likely many more who quickly left the disturbing scene.
"It was pretty graphic," he said.

Police arrested a panhandler who reportedly lit man on fire outside a convenience store in Long Beach, Calif. after not receiving money.
The 63-year-old victim was hospitalized with third-degree burns. He is in critical condition.
ABC Los Angeles affiliate KABC reported Fridaythat a panhandler approached the victim walking into a 7-Eleven store and asked him for money. The victim said no.
When the victim left the store and got into his SUV, the 37-year-old transient reportedly doused him and the inside of his vehicle with a flammable substance and lit it on fire, engulfing the truck in flames with the man inside, KABC reported.
"With the door open you could see the entire insides were ablaze," one eyewitness told "Good Morning America." "He came out and he was horrifying. His entire shirt was on fire, his head was on fire."
Authorities said it was a random act of violence. The two men did not know each other, police said.
"It's a horrific crime to think that somebody's, really no motive, just sitting there, minding their own business and then to be lit on fire," Long Beach Police Sgt. Aaron Eaton told KABC.
KABC reported the transient was arrested and will be charged with arson and attempted murder.
Police have not released the names of the two men.

Maybe he just got the news that Home Depot wasn't with Tony Stewart anymore.

(AP) -- A North Texas man has been sentenced to 75 years in prison for killing another man by running over his body with an SUV as many as seven times.
Prosecutors say 22-year-old Jesus Antonio DeSantiago of Plano will be eligible for parole after 37 years. He was convicted of murdering 21-year-old Ashton Williams and sentenced Friday.
Authorities say DeSantiago and his drug supplier met Williams in September 2011 for a drug deal in Plano. Williams grabbed cocaine from the supplier and ran away. DeSantiago found Williams nearby and drove after him as he ran into a field. DeSantiago ran him down with his Ford Explorer, running over his body repeatedly.
Police later arrested DeSantiago and skin found in the undercarriage of the SUV was used as evidence to prosecute him.
