Old Chase threads

This Chase format is amazing. I'll never understand anyone who doesn't like it. Y'all too hung up on the "regular season." Champions shine when it matters the most...playoffs baby!

Also, you guys are treating Miami like the Champ will finish 12th. Pfft. No chance. I bet one of the 4 wins the race. The entire field will be staying out of their way. Remember Tony Carl? They finished 1-2. Miami will probably see all 4 in the top 5-8. If not, it's cause they wrecked trying. Imagine if today were Miami. And the last four were Joey, Kez, Harvick, Gordon. I'd have no problem giving Joey a trophy. I just can't imagine getting down to the last four with a guy like Aric left. All four will likely be deserving.

This is a big boy format, fellas. Champions wear big boy pants. Win or go home. Isn't that why there's a finish line?
Always good to have your feedback here Allen.

But I respectfully disagree with it all

The driver who scores the most points over the entire season is deserving of the trophy.

Hell, Gordon won 3 races this year and even that is not a guaranteed. He could be out next week which would be such a joke.
So you're against all playoffs? Super Bowl? World Series? NCAA Tourney? How is this any different? It's not. It's literally no different. All regular season accomplishments get tossed. Hit the reset button, turn up the heat, and let a champion rise from the cream. I love it.

I wish. A week or two ago Jimmie said he'd rather win eight championships without winning another race rather than catch and pass guys like Gordon and Petty in wins but not win another title. Sad.
I've said it before and I'll say it now - I'd certainly love to see Gordon get his 5th championship but if it came down to choosing between a 5th championship or getting 100 wins, I'd rather see him get 100 wins.

If Joey or Kez, or Harvick didn't win about half and half would like/dislike..If Gordon didn't win, they would hang Gustofisin, accuse Nascar of race fixing, and sue Goodyear for a bad tire..

Haha...it's all good. I don't have the history with the sport most of you guys have. I get that. Change isn't that hard on me. Like I replied to Reck...I loooooove playoffs. This is the best NASCAR equivalent to date.

It's literally no different as long as you forget that other sports are based on head-to-head competition in which no two schedules are exactly alike.

It is 100% different. Football teams play on the same type of field every week playing one other team at a time. NASCAR drivers race on a different style of track every week and compete against everyone all 36 weeks. Besides, the playoffs in NASCAR is totally skewed for drivers who have a the best cookie cutter track program. If we're gonna have a playoff in NASCAR, each style of track from the regular season should be represented in the chase. And including other factors that have been noted in these forums hundreds of times about the differences in NASCAR and stick n ball playoffs that I'm not delving into again.

I'm fine with resetting the points or whatever because that's the "playoffs" thing but dont give me that one race crap.

And if you really want to get into the Super Bowl, World series and NCAA talk. Them guys play 1 team per round so let's not get confuse here.

As far as the regular season accomplishments getting "tossed" then how come you can carry your wins into the chase? Why not reset them ALL at zero? Why the gimmick?

you are missing the boat a bit with the track thing. two tracks can be the same distance, but the banking, pavement, and turns are all different. Ovals, Tri Ovals, flat mile banked mile, concrete, asphalt, new pavement old pavement, on and on

The difference is this isn't stick & ball. This is racecars. Stick & ball teams do not play every other team every weekend. Keep the stick & ball crap out of NASCAR.

Agree with the last paragraph.

Make no mistake about it...all playoffs are gimmicks meant for drama. NASCAR just jumped on board late. It'll feel natural to more people each season. My grandkids probably won't be able to fathom the idea of no Chase grid.*

*format will probably be changed again in 3 seasons.

I disagree. The big boy format was when the best team from the whole season was crowned the champion. Not the team that gets hot in the fall. I understand that one of 4 or 5 of the best all season(2,4,22,24,88) will still probably win the championship... But the fact that a couple of them can be officially ELIMINATED from contention next week is bull****. Going from a solid points lead to SOL in 2 weeks in September is BS. JMO.

Or NASCAR wont be televised because the ratings suck so bad because this chase BS and Brain's constant meddling is turning people away faster than ever before

The scoring in nascar are the points.

The way nascar does it would be like resetting the score in the Super Bowl after the third quarter to create a dramatic finish.
Nah, points are how teams are ranked - just like wins/losses. Throw 'em out and advance through the playoffs. The Chase is more than 25% of the season anyway.

There's always been little room for error in the Chase era. If Gordon finishes 43rd next week, he'd likely be done using last season's format anyway.

He got in by the seam of his pants last year. He should have never even been in last year. In a proper points championship, ain't no way in hell he wins last year's championship. That said, last year's format sucked too.

I see Allen's point..even without all the stick n ball references and I see what others are talking about the sudden death that can happen to their pony. But another point has to be made about the under dogs who could make it to the next round. It helps their racing programs, and for the sport in general that helps the racing. So man yhave blinders on to just watch one driver, they don't care about those things. Yeah I know that won't be a popular opinion for the one horsers.

What really pisses me off, is the Nationwide and Camping World series have points systems that are nailbiting close every year - with no chase system.

Why is the Cup series the guinea pig for these radical changes? And then the Nationwide series gets the cool cars (Camaro and Mustang).

none of the drama though, and so far not much excitement to make the news like what is going on now in cup..yeah I know dog and pony show, but if you get to a point where it is cool to know who won the race on Sunday with the me too er's and there ya go jackpot

How boring would it be for AJ or Aric to still be in contention at Homestead. We'd be watching them race for 25th place several laps down while they try to out suck each other.

because they are the cash cow that keeps it all going on.

All I know is that I always found racing kinda on the boring side. I appreciated it...but it didn't excite me like it excited most fans. The first time I was really "excited" by it was Tony/Carl Miami. The next time was Richmond last season. Both had the feeling of "one and done." But these last two races I was glued to my screen like a race has never glued me to a screen before. Today was a BLAST (even with one of my clients going to the garage and likely now toast).

That's gotta be worth something, right? I doubt I'm alone. This sport DESPERATELY needs new blood. I'm new blood. But like I said earlier...I don't have the history you guys have. So I respect the fact that your passion is being screwed with. I really do get that. You guys have had lots of tradition pulled out from under you. That's usually unfair.

Alright I gotta go...wife just poured more drinks!

I still have a problem with it only coming down to one final race. I think they should have added 2 more races to the chase. make it 12 races, 3 race segments each. The interesting thing for me is seeing all the mistakes on pit road. it seems the added pressure is causing more mistakes with loose wheels.

IMO, the new Chase is doing nothing to get new fans. We live in a different time than when this sport began. New fans will be on board for a bit but as soon as the fad wears off they will be gone. Brian France will continue to drive away the dedicated old school fanbase with his BS gimmicks until the sport can no longer financially sustain itself.
I've been a NASCAR fan since the legendary drivers were in the cars (Petty, Pearson, Yarborough, Allison, etc.)
I'm becoming less and less interested in a sport where I never missed a broadcast for racing, qualifying or practice. I don't even watch qualifying anymore; it's a joke.
At the rate the sport is going, I'll eventually quit going to LVMS every year, then I'll quit going to Fontana every year. Brian is doing a grand job of killing the sport.
If NASCAR wants to be like stick 'n ball, then why watch NASCAR? Why not just watch stick 'n ball?

Aric out placed your pony today and was running 5th when he had engine problems last week, one horse ponys don't see how well he has been doing. 3 top tens going into the chase also. A.J. won a race fair and square, those are the rules deal with it. right now he is in position to advance to the next round. Great for their under funded teams..more competition=good in my book

that is what happens when you get older and closed minded. you are from California, lighten up, this ain't life or death, plenty of other racing series doing their thing.
