I don't get a chance to see qualifying much but I noticed the cars parked diagonally along pit road at Darlington. Why do they do that? Is there a reason?

I believe the reason is it's a rule. Also it keeps them from having a 43 car pile up at the start of qual.

Easier/faster to park and takes up less space than parallel parking.

No one knows why they park diagonally. Nose in for qualifying and I noticed they were parked nose out for some reason after qualifying at Dega. I think there is a used car salesman organizing the cars.

next...why do they park diagonally when under red flag conditions more often than not?

I'm just guessing, but maybe because they are pluging coolers into the front of the car they don't want them facing pit road.
This would be my guess. From a safety perspective, having the cars backed in would put a crewman servicing the front of the car (hooking up cooling unit) near the line of traffic on pit road - especially during a Q session..
