News on the Bodine's: Geoffrey Bodine is off to a busy start in 2004. After returning from a trip to Iraq on Saturday, where he entertained American and coalition troops, the Chemung native announced Wednesday he has signed a deal with Steve Prescott, owner of NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Team EJP Racing, to drive its #03 Chevrolet Silverado in 2004 [more info on my Truck Series Site]. Last week, Bodine spent two days in and around Baghdad during a six-day trip to the Middle East as part of the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserves NASCAR Civic Leaders II Tour. He visited soldiers in Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar with a group of eight NASCAR personalities, including car owners Richard Childress and Jack Roush, and drivers Rick Crawford and Ron Hornaday. While on his Middle East tour, Bodine spent time at the Baghdad airport and also traveled several hours by convoy to a military controlled power station, where he greeted servicemen and signed autographs. He also witnessed what life is like for many Iraqis. "We saw the people, the culture and hundreds of little kids lining the road to see us," he said. "The poverty in the towns was saddening." Bodine also flew in military Blackhawk helicopters to a remote base where he said no entertainment group had ever been to before. "Those guys were ecstatic to see us," said Bodine, who admits it was the most dangerous part of his trip. "If you try to drive there in a vehicle you'll get shot at." He also witnessed the tragedies of war when two dead American soldiers, including a female helicopter pilot, where transported on their military C-130 flight out of Baghdad. At 54, Bodine's career had seemingly come to a crossroads, but now it is his two younger brothers, Todd and Brett, who are faced with uncertain starts to the 2004 season. "I'm worried about my other two brothers," Bodine said. Geoffrey said they aren't expected to take part in official Nextel Cup testing at Daytona, which began earlier this week. Both are still trying to secure sponsors to drive in the upcoming season. He said Todd is talking to some potential Nextel Cup sponsors, but "nothing has been put together."(in part from the Elmira Star Gazette)
AND Todd's wife, Lynn posted this on Todd's website message board - "We wish we could tell you that Todd will be driving at Daytona but chances are not. We are keeping our heads high and working on a few sponsors that we will take somewhere when they come through. It will be later in the spring we think when that may happen."(www.todd-bodine.com)(01-9-2004)

Good to see that Geoffrey Bodine will be running the 04 Craftsman Truck Series. The Bodines are good Folks and Love to Race! Hopefully Todd and Brett can Find a Ride Soon!

No Bodine fans in here? I had a chance to a couple of the Bodines >> Nice Down to Earth Folks >> It would be nice to see them in Nextel Cup, Busch and Truck Series.

Geoff Bodine is one of the most misunderstood drivers in NASCAR.
The guy has great talent, an innovative mind and a sincere personality.
Geoff brought a lot to the table when he started in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
His being misunderstood came from the thought many had when he battled Earnhardt every week, until Bill France, Jr., put an end to the constant skirmishes.
During that time frame, Geoff had negative things to say and sort of "shot from the hip" when he opened his mouth although many times he hit the nail right on the head with his remarks but was considered to be whinning.

When people take the time to see Geoff Bodine for the type of person he truly is, and you don't need to be a fan to make these observations, he is sincere, disciplined, intense, knowledgeable and has a mechanical gift. Geoff Bodine knows race cars and setups.

It was Geoff Bodine who took NASCAR from the cave man stages of "manliness" to driving cars with power steering.

It was Geoff Bodine who saw the USA bobsled team struggling when they should have been on or near the top, by putting his money where his mouth and mechanical talent lay and brought them to a new found pride in Olympic competition. He still is active in USA Bobsled Olympic competition. This wasn't a publicity stunt for Bodine, he really cared. And he does not look for accolades for his efforts.

As for his grit as a racer, he survived a crash at Daytona that might have convinced many drivers to quit, but he came back.

Geoff Bodine is a racer, a humanitarian and a sentimental personage.
He'll do well in the truck series and the only thing against him is his age.

Give the man credit for what he has accomplished. Forget the undeserved nicknames afforded him by people who never looked beyond the real person who started wearing the Levi Garrett driving suit. Look at his accomplishments and humanitarian efforts in his later years. He won't tell anyone about them, but they are there.
