The Commitment Line Rule

I know this rule hasnt always been in place, can anyone tell me why it was put in place?

Is it just another stupid rule by NASCAR?

I remember back in the day guys would be pulling off pit road at the last second or dive bombing on to pit road

Was there a wreck that changed it?
 
You're coming to pit road or you're not. There seems to be sufficient chaos at pit entry with the line in place.

Back in the day, my gramma drove a Buick.
 
This rule was put in place in order to help keep the pitting cars single file. This is a safety measure so that there aren't drivers brake-checking, swerving, etc on pit lane on their way to their box. It has visibly cut down on pit road accidents, which is a good thing for the pit crew members. Pit road is the only aspect of the sport where I am completely fine with NASCAR heavily regulating things.
 
What would be just flat awesome, ‘n way cool, would be to have a floatin’ commitment point. No one knows where it is ‘n the tower could call anyone onna violation.

It’d be as cool as a caution for a shop rag, helium balloon or nothin’ more’n Sadie’s drawers on the race track.

I wasn't a fan of the Richmond Commitment Box Rule change that was reported about 10 times by the guys in the booth -- until Kyle Busch ran over it.

Now I'm a fan!

I had forgotten about how disorganized pitting could become with drivers trying to dupe the field. I thought the end of of the pit lane barrier to the track would be an effective commitment line.

I agree 100%. Do your racing on the track and keep the pit crews safe. The only thing I don't like is the pie shaped speeding sections. That has to be done away with and just use a gun to register the speeds in those areas.
 
I am by no means a KB fan, but, there should be a cone there or at least be where if you are in the box and not outside, track side, then all is good. It looked to me like he ran through the middle of the orange square.

Yes, he should have known better but there is just so much to keep up with coming to pit road in a crowd. Knowing his temperament, I see why he was soooo pissed off.

1) There are tracks that don't have that barrier, where the right side of pit road is open to the infield.
2) Who wants to sit through the inevitable caution when someone jukes too late and eats the butt end of that wall?

Pit entrance is close to the actual racetrack. Usually pit roads are separated by a field of grass and plenty of room to spare.

Martinsville is the same. Hell I think Bristol is too. All short tracks are set up that way.
 
Pit only under green.

When the caution flies for a red rag on the track, freeze the field by running position. Meaning, if the car directly ahead of you is two laps down – tough. You restart behind her. Everyone maintains their position.

The pace car, a car capable of being race competitive but with lights, brings the field up to 90% race speed with the leader directly behind ‘n the green flag flies when it peels off for pit road. One lap later the pits are open for business.

We won't have any of the recent nonsense.

Exactly.

Under caution, while following the leader as they approached the entrance to pit road, knowing that he was going to do whatever Logano did, there was absolutely no reason for Busch to be that close to the 22 car.

If instead of being right on his bumper he had been a couple three car lengths behind Logano, Busch wouldn't have had any problem getting inside the box.
