So the other day I decided to task myself with a long time consuming task for no reason. I decided to figure out what drivers have been in the most accidents. Because I always feel the need to over do things I decided to turn this into a Lastcar style project. So someday I will have a website with all this information organized better but so far I have completed the stats on crashes for the 2017 Cup Series season. My methodology for this is I count all races, points paying or not. I do not do practice or qualifying because I just don't think I would be able to find that information and this takes long enough to do already. What I consider a crash for a driver is based off of racing references reports for the race. It includes all numbers listed as involved in a caution causing crash, or listed out due to crash damage. If a wreck takes place but is not recorded because the race either ended or was not cause for a caution it is not included.

That being said here are some stats from 2017.

449 incidents

Most was 45 at the fall Talladega race

Fewest was 0 at Watkins Glen

Cole Whitt and Ryan Newman had the fewest wrecks out of full time drivers with 7.

and now listed below with the total number of incidents I counted them with is the full list of the 51 drivers involved with a crash at least once last year. Honestly wasn't that surprised with who popped up as number one.

Thanks for going to the trouble of putting this together as it is interesting. I was surprised at where some of the drivers were ranked.

Wow impressive, that's awesome. Are you planning on keeping a running total this year? Almirola for 2 :D
Yep I have running stats for all 3 series plus ARCA. I plan to put out updates when I have enough to update with. I started a twitter for it where I update stats.

No problem. Ibm was surprised to by some though when I think about it they kind if make sense.

I'm going to over time work my way backwards through the years, but don't expect the 1949 stats for awhile haha.

I have to give it to you for the effort you put into this.

A unfair stat for Danica, someone was always trying to touch her rear and it looks like KK did it the most. :sarcasm:

No, if anything Thompson was the worst 1 start and 1 wreck. The drivers who ran the full schedule with the fewest were Cole Whitt and Ryan Newman.

#of races ran does have an impact.

It would be interesting to see the number of wrecks each started and got caught up in for each driver

I think to do that I would have to rewatch every single race. Racing reference only gives so much detail unfortunately

Right, I know its a big undertaking.

So Newman was tied for lowest among full-time drivers? If that stat holds for previous years, it easily explains how he repeatedly makes into the Chase and past the first round without winning any races.
I will keep an eye on it as I do past seasons. The ultimate goal is to have an all time list.

I bet with drivers he wrecked it would be up there in the top category. He's a rolling wrecker

Just finished the Daytona 500 stats. 29 different drivers were involved in 34 incidents. Martin Truex Jr was involved in the most in the 500 with 3. He leads the crash stats standings heading to Atlanta with a total of 4.

Working on the 2016 Cup crash stats now. I just finished Kentucky so halfway through the year, 303 total incidents so far, currently a tie for most between Danica and Allmendinger with 12 a piece.

I think you have found the area where Danica will run in the top five consistently on back. I remember Kvapil and Gilliland in the BK's and her tangling quite a bit

Well Ricky and Brian Scott are hot on her and AJs heals so it could go anyway when I work on the second half probably tomorrow night.

I don't think he wrecks people, drivers just have to recognize that he races hard and doesn't roll over for anyone. If they do that, they can avoid wrecks. Reminds me of another guy who drove for RCR and raced just as hard.

That's easy enough to fix: don't try to pass him. :D
Yeah that is what Newman hopes for :D
