NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

At this rate, we could have a race at or below 1.0, and that is troubling.

People will watch Indy because it's Indy. Should be the highest or second-highest rating for NBCSN from September onwards depending on how Darlington does.

Richmond has all the makings of a ratings disaster though. Football season. Saturday night. NBCSN. It's gonna be rough. Las Vegas and Dover will probably be in the vicinity as well.

It's unfortunate that it was down, especially down from being on an oddball network last year. But yeah, that is still a lesser decline than what we're seeing for Cup races. This suggests to me that there is still a relatively large (compared to all other motorsports) core NASCAR audience, but fringe-ier fans are dropping like flies.

No Reprieve For NASCAR As Kentucky Hits Record-Low
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has accomplished a great deal in his professional life, but turning NASCAR ratings around may be too much to ask.

Last Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series Kentucky 400 earned a 1.3 rating and 2.3 million viewers on NBCSN, down 19% in ratings and 16% in viewership from last year (1.6, 2.7M) and down 32% and 29% respectively from 2016 (1.9, 3.2M).

Martin Truex Jr.‘s win ranks as the lowest rated and least-watched edition of the race (dates back to 2011).

Kentucky was the 15th of 17 Cup Series races this season to decline double-digits to a multi-year low. Of those 15, it was the 13th to hit an all-time or decade-plus low.

Rain Provides Cover For Another NASCAR Drop
NASCAR ratings dropped yet again last weekend.

Sunday’s NASCAR New Hampshire 301 earned a 1.5 rating and 2.5 million viewers on NBCSN, down 23% in ratings and 22% in viewership from last year (2.0, 3.2M) and down 28% and 24% respectively from 2016 (2.1, 3.3M).

Kevin Harvick‘s win was the lowest rated edition of the race in at least 20 years and the least-watched since at least 2000. Just five years ago the race had a substantially higher 3.2 and 4.9 million on TNT.

Kyle Busch is right about the whole if you didn't like that, don't watch. Not sure what people want anymore.

The problem I have with these ratings is "where they are shown"
Most of the races are on two fairly new Cable channels that are not really available
unless a person increases their package costs. The other question is "are these channels even available every where?" I know we can only get the races available on TSN because they have the Canadian broadcasting rights. Even then I had to increase my package to include
all five channels of TSN or I could be watching a replay of the race at 2 am.
I think many newer fans have fallen away because of those reasons.

TV is important because it gives fans a chance to watch the race if they don't live by track.

Network placement of the events is definitely playing a huge role. I've been reviewing the numbers for this season, and every race that was on a broadcast network, and wasn't postponed (minus Michigan & Richmond) has reached a minimum of 4 million viewers. On the flip side, there has yet to be a race on a cable network have 3 million or more viewers. In many cases it's a difference of 1.5 million viewers. The lowest scheduled race on broadcast was the Richmond race which had 3 million on a Saturday night. Going to be interesting what the September edition of that race does, considering it'll be on NBCSN.

NASCAR Running on Empty As Slide Continues
NASCAR TV ratings are a broken record.

Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series Pocono 400 earned a 1.7 rating and 2.75 million viewers on NBCSN, down 23% in ratings and 25% in viewership from last year and down 35% and 36% respectively from 2015 (2.6, 4.3M). The 2016 race was postponed due to rain.

Kyle Busch‘s win was the lowest rated edition of the race since at least 1998 and the least-watched since at least 2000.

Just five years ago the race had a 3.2 rating and 4.9 million viewers on ESPN. A decade ago, it had a 3.8 and 6.2 million.

It isn't what racing has compared to years ago that matters. What is the share of TV viewers it gets today that counts. I believe TV viewers of every age is down considerable from years ago.
Not many Nascar fans are going to shell out a good portion of their pension money to buy extra channels for 3 hrs TV every week. Besides, most races are only on a small cable channel that is not even available to many. That is why the Network is paying so much.

I think the exodus of star power over the last three years combined with the same three guys winning every week is what's really taking a toll on the TV numbers.

Indy is competing with the opening of NFL weekend and the Colts open at home. If Indy had attendance issues in the past I don't know how Nascar thought competing with the Colts would solve that

Before everyone gets excited about the race ratings of a 2.3 share. Try and remember it was on NBC and the race wasn't last year. Also, Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN pulled a 2.2 share that same night.

Nah, we wouldnt want to get excited

They can't have too many Nascar races on network TV, their cable network would suffer even more than it is now. So lets not forget in our excited deathbedding exuberance, cable network needs Nascar and any other programming that can keep customers buying the premium tiers.

Colts...or Brickyard 400. You'd have to be brain-damaged to watch one over the other. I'll leave that up to you to figure out.

And look at that...I've bounced back.

NASCAR needs a “Tiger.” Erik, Bubba, Chase or someone needs to step it up to help save this sport. Kyle can’t do it alone since he has so many haters and Kevin and Martin are too old. Jimmie is done too.

Will Chase Elliot fill the need? Jones and Bubba won't be the saviors however Bell maybe.

Without the drama NASCAR got its lunch eaten by golf. 1.62 overnight rating vs. a 6.1 for golf. Also, the race was down from last year's 1.96 rating.
