“If I go, I’m not going just to run it,” said Stewart, who hasn’t had any serious discussion with teams yet. “I don’t want to be a sideshow like Danica (Patrick) was at Indy this year. If I go, I want to go feeling like I’ve got the same opportunity to win that everyone else in the field does.
“I care about running well in the car. I don’t know want to be the circus sideshow. If I do it, that’s not why I’m doing it. If I do it, I’m doing it because I want to win the race.”

got to draw the line somewhere :D

“Everything’s a possibility,” he said. “There’s nothing I’ve written off and said, ‘You know what, I’m never doing it.’ Everything is an opportunity still. I’m getting anxious to do stuff again.”

With possibly one exception – Formula One.

Even though NASCAR partner Gene Haas has a team, Stewart said it literally wouldn’t be a good fit.

“That’s going to be a tough one,” he said. “(F1 drivers are) skinny. I don’t mind working hard to be a race car driver, but I don’t want to have to work that hard just to be skinny. I like to eat still.”

He wouldn't cut it in F1 if he tried imo.

Good old smoke has a nasty attitude. Retirement obviously hasn't cured his diarrhea of the mouth. That Danica comment was uneeded.

I also dont think he has a say on whether his return to indy is a circus show or not. If people hype his comeback, he has no power to stop the "circus."

I say do it....I'd like to see him getting his ass whopped by all those young studs in this series.

Danica was a sideshow this year. No one gave her a chance to win. She was there to be there and end her career where she started. Nothing more.

yep Tony said he wanted to race a race before the 500, it would be an insult not to.
most of the detractors don't really know how sharp and race savvy Stewart is about the whole business of racing.

"If we were going to try to do the 500, I would want to do at least one race before that," Stewart said.
"If I go, I want to go feeling like I've got the same opportunity to win that everybody else in the field does," Stewart said. "It's an insult to the guys that do it every week to show up and think you're going to be as good as those guys are."

You are such a hater, bro.

This would be great to see and I bet Foyt Enterprises would be willing to make this effort happen.

I'm a Tony Stewart fan but I wonder how competitive he can be - even with one race to get up to speed. If he does run I'll cheer for him just like I did for Danica.

I think that is what will draw a lot of fans to the race if Tony gets a ride together. Curiosity. I know I'm curious to see how he would do. Kurt got in one without any experience and did pretty well in the 500. Tony has had a lot of experience in open wheel Indycars. I would think he would be a decent threat to win or he wouldn't be going there. .

Sounds like he and Penske are just working out the details. Guess I may have to finally make a trip to the Indy 500.

Would love to see Smoke do this. If he does , he may have to eat some of those those Danica
words cause I am quite sure there will be a steady throng of press following him
around constantly. I think he has a misguided vision that he can just show up
quietly , win it, and leave. That would not happen with out a ton of daily fanfare.
A Penske union would obviously increase his odds of winning,

Jenna Fryer reports that Tony is backing off his Indy 500 ambitions, in the wake of the injuries Robert Wickens suffered at Pocono.

"After Robert Wickens got hurt, I don't know how excited I am about it anymore." ( Link to AP article )

It makes sense; he went though a serious injury before so why risk loosing his ability to run the races he likes.

It seems an odd comment for someone who still straps into sprint cars. Yet he and every other race car driver are certainly free to make their own choices about where to race and not to race.

~25 Indycar drivers strap-in biweekly and on average one gets seriously hurt or killed every other year (Wickens, Franchitti, Hinch, DW).

Compare that to the hundreds of sprint car divers out there on any given Friday or Saturday night. Yes there's more bad incidents total but the number of cars/drivers out there competing is much much greater than Indycar.
