Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

This is why the 400 was moved from 4th of July weekend, and from the sound of it, the race is not coming back, really though, if the Daytona summer race isn't on 4th of July weekend, then just put the date out of it's misery, IMHO:

LOL...The other night I jokingly said the superimposed football field was a trial run for a bowl game. Turns out they'll be playing a different kind of football in the tri-oval!

It still sucks they moved the "Firecracker 400" from the weekend of the 4th. It went from a destination weekend to being lost in the shuffle during the start of college football in the south.

I foresee the summer Daytona race moving to the road course within a few years (maybe double-header with Indycar). Keep the summer oval for the Xfinity series

Plus, it's also in the peak of Hurricane Season

Now heres a crazy thought I had. NASCAR, F1 Double header.

You'll see American Football and soccer/European football take place on the same field at the same time before you see an F!/NASCAR doubleheader. Too much arrogance up in the Race Control tower on both sides.

Probably not, but I think it is a safe bet to say there will be more Nascar/Indycar combinations.

Because futbol and Independence Day go together so well, am I right?

How bizarre.

Penske on Coffee with Kyle had an interesting idea. They were talking about how out of line costs were. Penske said for the feeder series they don't have to run all the races. Let them take like their best 18 races to use for points. That way the expenses are cut for the teams that are having a hard time running all 36 or for a start up team to get into the series.. They might need to run 20 to get 18 good ones, but it gives them some freedom to control costs.

That is honestly brilliant

The race purse has a lot to do with who shows up.
Maybe pay 90% of the purse to the top 25 cars, that will thin things out pretty quick. Just a thought after reading Penske's comments.

The object or in the context Penske was talking about was attracting new blood into the sport by not only cutting expenses drastically but also making it easier for teams to come into the sport. It starts at around 18:25

Years ago they used the road course at Daytona during the Firecracker 400. The sports cars would run on it the day/evening before the 400.

I will say it looks like Bristol, Dover, Texas, and a few others will be down to one date next year. Never thought I'd say that about Bristol.

where in that article does it say Bristol is losing a date? I'd wager there is absolutely no way that place is losing one of its dates, the track is too beloved and the racing more times than not is good there.

That would absolutely blow. I love Bristol and Texas. Dover is still pretty good but I'd care about that one losing a date the least.

I don't have a big problem with Bristol losing a date if it is replaced by another short track, Bristol is a special track and having one big night race for it will give the race more prestige.

Can we kick Loudon off the schedule? I have no idea how they fare as far as attendance is concerned, but I've always thought it was the worst track on the Cup circuit by a huge margin.
Just like Dover, it's a unique track. Rockingham and Wilkesboro were unique as well.
We already have more than enough races on 1.5ers, none of the short tracks/1-milers should lose a date.

Its starting to get serious:

Be interesting to see the effect of this (+/-) on the tracks that get only one year deals. Maintaining corporate support (local/national), figuring out a renewal structure, keeping a loyal customer base etc will have track staff working overtime.

I really like Dover, and absolutely loved Rockingham and North Wilkesboro.

Loudon might be "unique" but that doesn't mean it's any good. There are plenty of non-1.5, non-cookie-cutter tracks worthy of a Cup date. If we're looking for the best 15, 20, 25 tracks for a Cup schedule, I just don't think Loudon should be in consideration.

That being said, it'll probably stay just because of the location.

Deals are for a single year, no more 5 year deals.

I like this. The tracks have much less leverage now, and this gives NASCAR flexibility to assess and make adjustments in coming years. It's doubtful they can introduce as much change as they want to in a single year.

Maybe not for a Cup race, but IF SMI decides to sit down with these folks and reopen I don’t see why an Xfinity and Trucks stand-alone date couldn’t happen if all involved decide to try to make it work. They have a year to get the track fixed up and race ready. Would I make a bet on it happening? No not at all, I think too much time has passed, the entire infrastructure of the place has to be worked on. The real question for me is all this is where is Rockingham? Their twitter and Insta have been quiet for a long while and there’s no news at all about them. I would hope there’s more stand alone races for Xfinity and Trucks, that would be my wish for upcoming schedule change. I just don’t know where you would go besides the usual suspects bandied about on these parts

Agreed! However, it has consistently had the best attendance for at least the past 10 years. It is a fantastic track to attend from everything I've heard

Same place it's been for a decade, languishing. Did anybody really expect this outfit to revive racing? Getting the track back in shape was the easy part; that was just money and grunt labor. Their concert showed everyone they had little clue as to how to execute an event. We haven't heard from them since.
