Kenseth in the 42 was a mistake

He said it....he was covering his ass in the quote you provided.

Truth. Honestly, it was good to see her happy. She and her kids will suffer for her husband's issues, but they don't deserve it. I would never wish bad things on a man's family.
I have a feeling she is happier now then when they were living the NASCAR life style. All of the big time racing organizations like NASCAR, INDYCAR, F-1 and NHRA can be such a strain on a relationship because everyone has to kiss so much azz and get pulled in so many different directions trying to keep the money people happy doing meet and greets and merchandise signing. And not just for the sponsors but for the series also. A driver has to keep the sponsors, the racing organization, the team owner, and the fans all happy, and try to keep their performance level as high as they can... all while trying to be a good husband and father. That can be a huge amount of stress for anyone, and it can put a huge amount of stress on the wife when she is trying to support him through all of this. Obviously, if it is a women driver then the roles are reversed.

I see many complaints about Matt, but I have yet to see anyone actually say who would have been a better choice given the situation?

I guess Chastain but I dont think they realize or fail to grasp he was under contract with Kaulig going for a Xfinity Championship. Who knows if Ross would have done better either? In my view if I was Chip I would have went the veteran route myself, we also dont know if he chose Matt to keep the sponsors from bailing. Matt has the experience of dealing with many a sponsor. I still think Matt turns it around this year, too early to say the move was a bust IMO

The above average talent is long gone. Matt is only a seat warmer at best now.
Even Kurt is not getting the job done. Time for CGR to start making moves. I suppose Ross is already penciled in for 2021. I hope they renumber the car.

If he's not already snatched up by a big team by the time Kurt's contract is up, Chip should go Ross 42 and JHN 1.

Chip knew he was under contract and committed to X before he brought him up to cover pre-COVID.
Sure. But I thought he covered for Newman in the 6 at Roush? That may have been struck on a knowingly basis of a temporary deal between the parties. We dont know the logistics contract wise of what it would have been to get him to run a full season in the 42 while also simultaneously running the 10 in Xfinity. It just never seemed that easy to me honestly.

As of right now there were not very many choices, they tried for Carl and struck out, Matt was probably the next best choice. Being a big Kenseth fan I did not see him or think that he would be carrying an empty sack to the track. Neither of the team cars were front runners, but at least Kurt pulled his big boy pants up and tried... Matt reached for his skirt.

But the checks keep arriving on time.
He’s getting better results than the 6 year Danica experiment.
1. Suarez lost his sponsorship
2. Suarez wasn't improving.
3. Almirola and Boyer are sponsored and both are solidly in the chase.

I don't think it is that easy to find another driver to plug n play at the cup level who brings talent, solid sponsorship, and is the right fit for the organization like some think it is. It just isn't that simple, this isn't stick n ball with players who basically have no choice where they go or a whole army of backers to please.

Points noted, but I respectfully disagree with the lot of you other than the Danica take by Charlie, lol. I do believe there are a few viable candidates who have not been given the time to shine in better equipment. I'm going to pump my brakes on Aric and see how it plays out with him, but I'm pretty sure Clint is done and had his peak a while back. I could put money on it. :p

I just wish that fateful day in April never happened, and my favorite driver would still be in the #42.

Nothing against kenseth hes a great driver. Im saying maybe the car is more to blame

Will agree with that there is an equipment issue....probably based on the lack of technical talent (some of which could be attributed to the Chinese Virus). That being said, it has to be obvious to all that Matt is not getting the same performance out of the same equipment that Kurt is. To me. this was on full display from the start of the race this past weekend.

Matt has never been an aggressive starter, one of those gnawing frustrations I have through out his career, and relatively cautious racer. Still, he has in the past made sure not to let his cautiousness take him out of possibly winning. He has done that more than a few times this year, something I did not expect. This last race, when he allowed himself to lose the lead draft, and in fact get within a few seconds of getting lapped (only to be saved by that timely caution towards the end of the first stage) is totally uncharacteristic of the body of Matt's career. Someone else said it....he is driving like a steering wheel holder.

It seems like a lets bash Matt thread and I get tired of it. Yes his finishes have been less than stellar, but, the car has had issues and there is an adjustment time period to get use to the new car. I wish to goodness we could get practice back on the schedule. Dega equipment failure may have been discovered prior to the race with some practice.

What's with the 'GEEEZZZZ'? Excluding Darlington 1, @kyle busch 18 is right.

yeah it is one thing to be slow, but wrecking slow is the ki$$ of death. I have a suspicion that played a role in picking Kenseth in the first place. He's never wrecked much

I'll be glad when the name Kenseth is no longer part of Nascar except in the record books.
I think he is doing a good job of imitating DW right now.

I'm not a hater of Kenseth, just never preferred his style of conservative points racing style. Stunned over him winning a championship with one win, Nascar changed up the game. Ironically years later Nascar's changes put Kenseth in a sudden death race to win or be eliminated and he was forced to race aggressively against Logano for survival and we know the outcome. Kenseth was out of his comfort zone.

He's had eight mediocre races, finishing in the mid 20s. Sadly, DW's downfall went on for years and a finish of 25th would have been gold. No comparison.

It looks like the old washed up has-been/never was big bully had a pretty good weekend

Better than expected but worse than his historical average at this track. Tried to pay attention (pretty hard since the camera seems to concentrate on the first couple, they need to pan back more often) and what I came away with is that Kenseth did not race anyone else, he just raced himself and the track. Except after the last pit stop, then he raced Kurt... and actually beat him.
