Cup RACE thread --- on dirt, Bristol

Liked it cause it was different. Nice to see sliding cars going fast.

WOOOHOOO!!! LFG! I’m honestly surprised he won. I figured he run around between 5th and 15th and have a decent day while the more experienced dirt drivers made their way to the front. pleasantly surprised.

Does that station have news in the broadcast window when the NASCAR race is on? If so, some stations these days don't like to pre-empt their newscasts for last minute re-scheduled events. Those ad slots on the newscasts have already been sold, and they might get more revenue in total from those than they would by airing a rescheduled NASCAR race. I remember when the Pittsburgh-Baltimore game on Thanksgiving was rescheduled to the following Wednesday. The NBC station in my area didn't air that game, because they didn't want to give up the revenue that had already been sold from the newscasts in that timeslot. Just a theory.

Local TV stations do generally get a few slots to sell local advertising during national network programs. But, perhaps the FOX affiliate in Greensboro thought they could make more money from advertising on their local programming.

The thing is, Local TV stations pay networks to carry network programming since being affiliated with a network adds significant viewership (value) to the station.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I believe local TV stations pay for all network programming whether they air all network programming or not. If I'm right, the FOX affiliate already paid FOX to air the NASCAR Cup race, and lost viewership (value) for not airing it.

I will say in the opinions it’s obvious who grew up with what style of racing. A lot of people who grew up with asphalt grassroots racing don’t seem to like this the way those of us who grew up with Saturday nights at the dirt track did
Where does that leave those of us who didn't grow up with racing at all?

I didn't dislike the racing itself, but I didn't see it as better than a regular Bristol race. I don't think it was worth all the format changes it required, most especially cutting the race length in half. It didn't televise very well, with poor visibility and a track maintenance delay.

Just me. I'll watch it next year but I saw nothing to inspire me to seek out other forms of dirt racing, or to make me regret missing the Trucks.

I dont think there is a need to cover Bristol each year. There are plenty of dirt tracks that would be willing to accept this race. Hell, theres a perfectly fine track in NASCAR’s hometown right outside of the asphalt track.
And owned by the same people. Run the All-star races over there. The smaller fields will fit perfectly.

Perhaps the issue is that the Dirt Track at Charlotte seats less than 15,000, and the Smiths are hoping that this gambit revives Bristol ticket sales when pandemic limits are lifted. Whether they are right, I don't know. It certainly has brought with it several companion dirt events, which is additional revenue for the track.

Eldora, which already seems to be a burned bridge, is 30,000. Knoxville is around 25,000. Most other notable dirt tracks are 10,000 or less. They also don't have Cup level garage facilities.

I'm not saying I wouldn't like to see a traditional dirt track instead, just giving likely reasons.

I may post this in a separate thread, just to get everyone's attention, but Denny Hamlin is one of just two drivers with 40 or wins without a title (other is Mark Martin).

Denny is the only driver with MORE than 40 wins without a title. of the 24 winningest drivers in cup, he's one of just two without a title. The four drivers below him all are champions.

Junior Johnson - 50 wins - no title

I agree 100%. I enjoyed the race but none more so than a regular Food City 500. I will however give it another chance next year, I actually will try to attend in person. I thought today was a cool day though, glad I watched.

Limited seats, high demand. Those venues will receive merch and food/beverage sales through the roof. They may have enough revenue over time to increase capacity and improve facilities. At places like Charlotte, they can house equipment at the speedway and cart to the dirt track. Some ingenuity and it’ll work.

Tbh while he definitely had some really Sh** luck and probably couldn't have helped running into the back I can't remember who, Larson at times looked as lost out there as Harvick on a road course. Just an off day for him.

:pbjtime: :lurk:

Do What? He was in the top 4 and coming when Bell in front of him took both of them out with a spin knocking Bell out and Larson had big damage.

I do actually agree. Yes that's why I said it was mostly bad luck. But after that happened everything went to hell with multiple crashes for him. I'm sure it was mostly because of the fact that his car was already ruined though from the first incident.

Hmm decisions decisions. Do I want to go to some obscure smallish dirt track across from Charlotte Speedway with very limited seating and pit areas, or would I rather go to a Nascar iconic track like Bristol. No brainer.

No ya don't, you just threw up some B.S. to see if it would stick

there, there @racefan41 . Lets keep all 4 sneakers planted on tera firma. Your trackbar adjuster is maxed out. Back off the throttle and come off the racing surface.

Its ok.

What a puss Hamlin is. His spotter or CC or whoever was basically telling him what to do. Hell, even Joey has said he’s going to rough you up for a win and has said he expects the same. I’m glad he wussed out. Going to be interesting to see how Joey reacts when it’s done to him. I hope he doesn’t turn into a hypocrite. I think he and Elliot’s issue last year may be an indication BUT that was more of a stupid move taking them both out and Joey expected ownership of it.
