Interest builds around possible changes to NASCAR schedule

The two race deal at Atlanta is a bit of a head scratcher for me...and I really like Atlanta.
Atlanta took the place of the Kentucky date.

The Quaker State 400 will take place at Atlanta this year as the title sponsor and its a favorite intermediate of fans and drivers alike. I think it was a good move by SMI to move the date there.

*cough* It should be low DF/high HP though *cough*

I think I qualify under the happy Atlanta has 2 dates again camp. Glad they are back to 2, I have always enjoyed the racing there.

You dont know what you had till its gone.
My dad and I knew what we were looking at long before it withered on the vine. Find me another high-banked 1-miler with a front dog leg that's paved with cheese graters.

It's not that racing should return to these outdated rural NC tracks as much as any new or reconfigured tracks should match NW and Rock as closely as possible. (I suggest starting with Talladega :p ) I applaud the decision to overhaul Fontana.

I didn't suggest that.

You're heavily invested here. Be glad it's crypto.
I haven't invested a dime. I haven't invested a single emotion, I'm not even upset. I thought we were all just discussing in a safe place

Well I am also interested in reconfigured tracks, there's one in Joliet id love to talk to you about

You mean like Andy Hillenberg's bank account?
Rockingham is in about as south as you can possibly go in North Carolina.

It's a legit cow town with not a lot in or outside of it.

I know others who live closer can confirm this as I've driven through the area a few times.

You missed the point. Again.

These tracks are all dead horses as far as Cup racing is concerned. Hillenberg had the trucks and he couldn't make that go.

Hey, watch it! Less than 10 miles east in Hamlet, there's a world-class rail freight yard featuring an ever-changing display of the east coast's finest graffiti! When the wind is right, you can hear the howitzers at Ft. Bragg. :bigfight:

$10M* for The Rock and $11M* for NW is a decent start. Many more investors will be needed to make them actually happen. IYAM, North Carolina short tracks and dirt tracks should have a larger pot than $10M* to be allocated among all of them. There are plenty of those who could use the money without having to fight over it.

* pending legislative approval

I think the problem with that track is location. There's way too much going on around there for people to care about nascar

I said that a long time ago. We have the technology to scan these tracks and build a clone anywhere.

Exactamundo. Pump all $30M into local tracks. That's enough to resurface a few of them, or upgrade the fan facilities, or put in a mini-golf for family members who aren't race fans. NC could market them collectively, like KY does with distilleries and horse farms, throwing back to the moonshine-running days. Offer a multi-track ticket package. Give the kiddies one of those 'passports' they can have stamped at each track. Bring in some tourist money across the state all summer, instead of to a couple of spots with uncertain weekends and futures.

Damn, if I can think of that in less than five minutes, somebody with some tourism authority should be able to put something together. Once you liberate the money from two 'traditional' tracks, the opportunities really open up.

No I’m afraid in you missed my original post in an effort to try to make me look stupid. I’ll add my initial repeated posts here and you can tell me where I said Cup racing each year at either track is a viable option
I hope this pans out and we see a NASCAR Series race at both. I'll try to attend one thats for sure.
my initial post on the matter. I didn’t say anything about Cup. A NASCAR sanctioned series yes.
Wilkesboro also has that 1 million from Marcus Lemonis coming. In all seriousness if the track is revived I don’t think it will be on a Cup schedule. I could see ARCA, Trucks, and Xfinity as the big weekend there with maybe the occasional Cup All Star race sprinkled in if the All Star Race is rotated
a few hours later. I even say here I don’t think Wilkesboro it will be added to a schedule. I don’t convey anything about hoping or expectation for Cup at The Rock either.
I have no expectations these tracks are even getting Cup races, I hope I didnt convey that. I am at the point where it's lets get someone turning a competitive lap first before a Cup race is even thought about.
this is today. So what point are you making that I’m failing to grasp? I don’t have a false hope for Cup at all. An All Star race maybe sure. But not an actual yearly stop on the schedule, that’s probably not gonna happen. You’ve mentioned Andy to me again today and before in the past as well as to others when The Rock is brought up. He was making an entrepreneurial move in trying to get the Rock up and running before. He failed and that’s that. People fail at a business everyday that’s the breaks. While I have empathy I also don’t really care, doesnt didn’t affect me in any way.

The initial second week of July date worked. Not much going on sports wise besides baseball here, I thought it had a good spot in the schedule. A bit hot but they had lights installed around 08. Where the track ran into trouble was the rotation of dates first on NFL Week 1 Sunday (big mistake) then back to end of July no night race.I could swear there was an August race in there somewhere

Andy's failure makes it less likely anyone else will attempt it. His was a reasonable effort, both financially and managerially, but it was only a few years before even ARCA stopped coming. Hell, LeMons and ChumpCar cancelled dates; they go down the road to Kershaw now.

Once again it was location. Being in the midwest and with other things that are going on you had a very small window when track could actually draw people, and those dates are in high demand for other northern tracks that traditionally pulled bigger crowds.

The Location looked liked it was working the first 10 years NASCAR had races there and it was packed. I’m not sure I buy your theory, that place was legit sold out the first 10 or so years

I can’t say definitively if anyone is going to try to have racing there we don’t know for sure. I guess that’d be a question to ask the current owners. When or if those fellas get their 10 million “What are your intentions with this money?” Just because it failed for someone is it going to fail for others? I would guess the current owners are going to have to answer that themselves

Yeah but part of that was season ticket holders had to buy tickets to all major events there (maybe 3?). I remember a guy from work had them and he would literally give away his Indy car tickets to whoever wanted them because he was stuck with them. I imagine the Indy car fans did the same for the nascar races.

Yea we had that package too. Felt bad my dad had to buy everything, it was a pretty penny. Shame that fella didn’t go to the Indy Car races, to be honest those were always insane in person...I always felt it was a better show than Cup. I think INDYCAR/IRL had their season finale at Chicagoland once or twice

Bingo. Love living in South Carolina but NASCAR works here because there’s literally nothing else other than college football. The entertainment is actually living here and spending time with others. Compare this to Midwest cities where’s there’s just as many major college football teams, NHL/NBA/NFL/MLB in almost all and tons of casinos.

I wasn’t “trying to make you look stupid”.

It doesn’t matter what level of competition people might want to run at any of these old dogs. Yes, Andy Hillenberg tried and failed. Good lesson.

Ah I felt like you were, not trying to jump on ya. I would hope some type of racing returns, but in a way you might be right: I haven’t brought up the state has to pass legislation for these tracks to get the money. I might be jumping the gun in that if nothing gets passed then the conversation is for nothing. Someone brought up up above currently operating short tracks in NC should get the money, I like that idea a whole lot.

Wasn't just Hillenburg. My neighbor Silas was also invested. Bryan Silas was a actually a fairly decent truck racer who fell off the charts when all this went down.

So true from that angle. They want the Smith's in Nashville to build a noise wall around the thing. Work around a soccer stadium taking up valuable parking and no telling what the taxes would be yearly. And on the other hand for a whole lot less of a hassle in every area, this place is willing and able to support bringing back N.Wilkesboro

With the 550 deal at Homestead, I prefer this move. Pheonix provides good racing all the way through, no issue here.

Not to mention, NASCAR has to pay for the renovations done to the track. I think we have to realize Homestead will not be the finale anytime soon, it sucks, but just got to roll with these punches.

I think it will move to the rebuilt Fontana in the future, but that track isn't happening yet

I've said it before but I hope NASCAR starts a rotation of championship races between Phoenix, Homestead, new Fontana, and Atlanta. Championship races in big markets. It'd really give more of a big race feel mimicking how the NFL rotates the Super Bowl to different cities each year and how College Football rotates their National Title game.

My only objection the finale at Phoenix is the race is too short for a championship-decider. Make that sucker 400 laps.
Pass I remember the year they made the spring Phoenix race 600 kilometers and that was too long

I prefer Phoenix over Homestead but think neither are deserving of the finale, especially if the finale isn't run on a rotational basis. I would put Atlanta, Darlington, and Martinsville as my top choices
