NASCAR - Television Ratings Thread

I'm not saying they shouldn't be. NASCAR and Fox made multiple changes - format, venue, network, car, etc. I'm saying I don't think it's possible to break down how much of the increase was due to each individual change.

I think any increase at all against the Olympics is terrific. Their ratings are way down. Maybe they should include K-pop bands between each skating pair.
What you said was moving it to a primary network which I took as a reason for better ratings. That's a no brainer. BUT it's a decision that Fox made and they are aparently glad they made that decision to broadcast the race on big FOX. Network happy = they pay for more.

Eh the NFL and NCAA Football have became so absurdly popular though. Just takes away all of the attention from any sport

I think NCAA football might be at the precipice of a big decline. Tradition is dead and it's all about the television dollars. It's tiresome watching the same teams every year end up in the playoffs. Kids quit on their teams opting not to play in "meaningless bowl games". We used to call all of the multiple bowl games that 25 years ago but times were different and you didn't have lots of selfish kids opting out and such. They'll probably expand the playoffs and add some mediocre teams that don't deserve to be there in the mix. Nothing will change.

What's selfish about not wanting to risk injury when you're not getting a bigger piece of the pie?

I dunno I guess they spend their entire childhood and young adulthood choosing to play a risky sport on the chance of hitting a big professional payday then chicken out on one last game It? It was rare 20+ years ago for guys to opt out.

Yeah it’s totally chickening out when you have headcases like Antonio Brown every week making headlines because of his CTE. 🙄

Ok nobody is chickening out because of CTE. If they were concerned with that they wouldn't be playing the sport period. You're gonna have to do better than that
lol. Why can’t you just answer your own question then.

why don't you and your compadre head over to the stick n ball thread?

We're not talking about a stick and ball sport. I was talking about college football in a decline similar to what Nascar went thru. Kind of a stretch I guess talking about that in a Nascar thread I guess.

Why risk getting an injury before the draft if you’re a shoe in to get drafted and risk not getting paid in a bowl game.

That's often cited but it's really rare. And it goes to prove my point that the championship format actually ruined the sport and truly made the other bowls worthless because before that format guys opting out was rare. Not all change in sport is for the better. It's a semi-pro league now and tradition was on the chopping block. That will cause fans to get disinterested. Not to mention there is no salary cap so no parity and the same few teams are always at the top and they always will be. It's actually down a much worse path than how Nascar went off the rails.

The worst part is it is likely beyond repair realistically unless the NCAA goes without football for a couple seasons to brainstorm how to fix this mess, and that won't happen due to the revenue the sport brings in to the universities (and NFL).

However, I have a proposition. There are currently 130 division-1 teams and that could be reduced to 100. Have 5 conferences of 20 teams (10 in each division), with the winner of each division going to a bowl game + 1 wild card team in each conference for a total of 30 bowl games. If you are healthy and don't play in the bowl game you don't get drafted.

So...down from 125 to 100 teams, down from 10 to 5 conferences (and no more independents), and down from 44 to 30 bowl games. There is your fix for more parity, more meaningful bowl games, and a more streamlined organization

The times are just too off for me. IMO they need to stop doing Asian Winter Olympics, the majority of countries are in North America & Europe

I hate this argument because these same guys play in the Senior Bowl. I feel like a full contact game very close to the draft is much riskier than a damn bowl game. Especially for skill position guys who can just slide down or throw it away

"Trades" have occurred, in the sense that drivers have swapped rides at the end of their contracts.
But would it be allowed, for say, at Indy this year Hendrick to trade Larson for Kyle Busch and M&M's? Obviously sponsors and manufacturers would have to amend contracts, but would NASCAR allow it if everyone else approved it?

I can't see why not. Owners points are tied to the car number and driver points are tied to the driver. Drivers have run for the championship in the past racing for different owners during the year.

I dunno know man. It just seems like further down the rabbit hole and away from what was. I hate the recent SEC expansion and I hated it back in the 90's when it brought Arkansas and South Carolina into the conference. I'm gonna quit on this topic tho it's way off the rails.

Serious question: Are trades technically NOT allowed? I am unaware of an actual rule banning trades

Let's make it a 3 way trade since Preece technically works for SHR

In addition to those moves, SHR gets Chad Knaus and Bowman. Hendrick gets Riley Herbst and gets Harvick as Chase Elliott's spotter and rights to use of Harvick's rear window.

“How we look at the digital world versus over-the-air versus cable, and it really kind of look at it as… the partners that we have today, Fox and NBC look at that world very differently based on, Fox really having Tubi so it’s not really a real direct-to-consumer play as NBC has with Peacock,” Phelps said. “Our sport [it’s] very important to make sure that we have significant eyeballs. The team model is very dependent on sponsorship so we need to make sure that whatever partner that we would… stay with or move to… we need to make sure that over-the-air is an important part of what that will be.”

The only downside is over-the-air may be nonexistant in 5 years

I remember hearing that in the '70s, when cable was going to kill over-the-air. OTA has one big competitive advantage - viewers never get a bill.
Like minded :) . I was going to say to the tv "expert" that they were saying that five years ago along with the demise of Nascar.

I have to disagree here because the biggest CFB ratings consistently come from the Southeast footprint and the upper Midwest, particularly Columbus. The teams consistently making the playoffs are coming from no other than the Southeast (SEC teams, Clemson) and the Big 10, mainly Ohio State. The west coast will only care about college football again if USC gets back to being elite, and with Lincoln Riley and they transfers they've pulled in they're off to a great start.

Bottom line, college football will be just fine despite everything that's going on in the sport

There's more to the overall 'health' of a sport than just TV ratings. A number of sports have seen ratings rise and fall and are doing just fine. No, they may not be as profitable but that doesn't mean they're in trouble.
