The Verizon 200 At The Brickyard will mark the second time the NASCAR Cup Series races on to the 2.439-mile road course in Speedway, Indiana. The NASCAR Xfinity Series will race on the road course for the third time after its 2020 debut. Indianapolis Motor Speedway opened in 1909, and has been the host of the Road Course race for the last two years. The course features 14 turns and an asphalt and brick track.

As boring as the Brickyard 400 often was and as fun as empty seats memes were, the existence of this road course race infuriates me.

The Brickyard 400 was still special to the drivers and was still a crown jewel event - TV ratings reflected that.

I think NASCAR is headed in the right direction overall, but the IMS Road Course deal is one of the worst decisions they've made in the post-BZF era.

Cup should race the oval, period.

In the words of Joni Morrison, "don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you got 'til it's gone?"

The Brickyard 400 was often boring as hell, and it definitely took a hit with the fans after the 2008 fiasco. But it's still special, it's still Indy, it was still a major event.

I miss the Brickyard 400, it was always my absolute favorite race on the calendar. Being from the midwest and understanding how important the Indianapolis 500 is....there was just something cool and exciting about watching my hero's (Jeff Gordon) race at the same track that the those drivers in May raced on. Now? Not so much.....

Oh for sure! and yea, 2008 turned me off for sure, but if NASCAR is going to race at Indianapolis then the oval is where they need to be at. A race can be boring but still mean something. For years Darlington almost put me to sleep, but it's Darlington so I still watched.

Move the Trucks and XFinity cars back to IRP, race Cup Sunday at the big boy oval, and you can keep Indycar on the weekend schedule with them running the road course.

Too many road courses on the schedule now, even though the oval led to some real boring races, i would rather it over the road course. Better yet.....just don't run a Indy anymore. It's not a good track for stock cars.

Y'all are ridiculous. First NASCAR runs the RECTANGLE course for 25+ years, then they try the road course, now you want them to make a brand new OVAL course at IMS?? They already have an oval.... that little midget track they built in the infield a few years back 🤣 🤣 🤣

Give the oval a shot with the new car and if it still sucks take Indy off the schedule.

I’m not a traditionalist. Stock car racing on the oval wasn’t very good. Unless there’s a money-making reason or the networks want it, I don’t see a reason to bring it back.

The Brickyard 400 was a ratings blockbuster.

Then came the road course, and nobody cared.

Your first link is from the July 4th weekend in 2020 . That was early in the COVID era, when NASCAR had the sports airwaves pretty much to itself. Note the comment that 2020 was a 39% increase over 2019. The second article notes 2021 was down 35%, or back to 2019 oval numbers. It also mentions the 2020 race as being one of the few sporting events that weekend.

The 2019 Brickyard 400 was up against the NFL, was an outlier, and still had more viewers than the IMS Road Course.

I have no idea why people think NASCAR and NBC will leave Indy altogether. The Brickyard actually helped them make large inroads both nationally and in the Midwest, and to this day Indianapolis still rates as one of NASCAR’s top-rated TV markets - a bigger one than Nashville, which seemingly everyone in the sport is horny for.

I didn't say I think they are going to leave Indy. That's not going to happen. I said I think they should leave Indy. It is not a good track for stock cars.

Fans dont see the business side of it in terms of the ratings boost it gave whatever network it was on and what this race used to mean to driver's/crew's. They are only worried about their own entertainment and if their attention could be held for more than 10 minutes.

I've been more than happy with the races at Indy lately, the Xfinity and Cup races have all been barn burners, hardly a dull moment.

I prefer the oval but I sincerely hope Indianapolis always has a place on the schedule. Oval or road course (begrudgingly)....its one of the most prestigious and tradition filled cathedral of motorsports in the world. The premier racing series in the US should be racing there. Every single year. Just my opinion though.

Given a choice, I would go oval ONLY because of the tradition, etc....I like the road course, however.....looking forward to this....and a clean post race inspection for a Toyota winner. Holding my breath already.

Never been a herd follower. Watching the oval, looking down that long line of single file cars, no wait one of them is attempting to pass, he's pulling out! The wind smacks him right in the face and back in line he goes. Almost impossible to set up a pass in the flat corners, too narrow, maybe the guy in front will have car trouble.
