Cup RACE thread --- Chicago Street

I guess hey have the same sound jerk doing all the networks, couldn't hear most of the commentators due to engine noise. I think he tapes it all for his own satisfaction in bed.

I thought he showed some great steady improvement last year and part of
The season before and was on the verge. But that has stagnated.
 
Race control was very level-headed yesterday. They gave Stenhouse the time to find an exit and allowed Ware to attempt reversing out of the tire barrier before throwing the yellow. I was relieved when they reached the white flag because this race didn't deserve to turn into a ****show with 5 GWCs.

SvG was a class ahead of the field, only AJ could keep pace with him on the same tires. Damn shame we couldn't see what McDowell could've done.

OK...I watched last night and came inside to the nice surprise that for some reason my DVR recorded the alternate telecast and the coverage was just odd. Based on that, if I did not have MAX I'd have no idea what was going on with Chase all day. His day was interesting to say the least. He got major front-end damage because of a jam-up in front of him and he and AG were ripping the spotter apart for not giving him good enough info from what it sounded like to me. Chase said it was "completely killed" as it was slow on the straights. Seemed like Chase thought they should just hold their track position and stay on the same strategy that got Denny a top-5 but AG decided to bring it in and try to fix it and got him out of the pits late and way behind the field. He was turning good lap times in clean air of course but passing was hard enough and when your straight speed is killed it's even harder.

One of those races that I was really glad I had MAX but not sure if more was mentioned on the regular broadcast. Knowing all that happened I was happy to see his top 20 streak continue and finish 16th but what a wasted opportunity with 24 bowing out so early as with a solid top-5 day and more stage points he could have taken the points lead. They were mad at the spotter and that's fine but I put this one on Chase for wrecking the car in practice and not being able to qualify. These are the things that happen back in the pack with the "squirrels" as Junior Johnson used to say. Had Chase qualified up front he could be in the points lead right now. Momentum killer of a day.

As for the rest of the race. SVG is a road racing god and I'd like to think the Cup guys are tired of him beating them all the time. Scary to think if he wins next week and the Glen and if Bell, Larson and Hamlin do not win again he would be LEADING CUP in wins. Just really strange for a guy that seems close to lost on the ovals. All this said, NASCAR has a problem when you know who is going to win before the green flag waves. I don't think the race was terrible or anything but from the odd vantage I had it was hard to tell and seemed really hard to pass.

There's only one road course in the playoffs. I doubted he would get past Round 1 but his playoff points from this win might get him through to Round 3. Playoff points will have to because it looks like his oval performance still won't cut it by Martinsville.

Maybe but it's just a different time now. "Fans" are more demanding of excitement and drama today. I was texting a friend as we were getting settled into our seats at Bristol this spring sending her pics of the track before the race started and I said "Looks like this will be the Kyle Larson show" and it was. The last 2 road course races I said everyone is running for second at this point and they were. Also - it's one thing when stars of the sport like Earnhardt or Larson are dominating but when it's an outside specialist like this it's just odd. Props to him though.

Montoya never had the benefit of racing in the kit car era where everyone has the same pieces to work with. With that in mind, 2 wins in 14 starts was pretty damn good. For reference, look at the stats for Truex and Larson on road courses before and after parting with EGR/CGR.

He has serious potential to play spoiler and bump a contender out of the R8. Gonna be interesting to follow.

Yea I felt his win last week was much about nothing as far as playoffs go, but with two in the bag and two more RC’s to go before the playoffs he’s definitely going to get through round 1 and maybe even round two if he runs 15-20 those two rounds while the playoff calamity happens around him
