I don't care either way, at this point.
The overwhelming majority of the fanbase wants the playoffs eliminated, and that alone should be reason enough for NASCAR to do it.
But then fans will complain when someone has the championship locked up with two races remaining. And if Chase Elliott wins the championship this year, you'll see a lot of people suddenly loving the playoffs again.

Chase has already won a championship under this format. If that didn't already turn his fans into playoff advocates, I doubt another one will.

When Chase Elliott won, the hatred for the playoffs definitely cooled off a metric ton. It wasn't until Joey Logano won in 2022 that the hatred rose again. The founder of this thread was pro-playoffs until Chevy drivers weren't winning the championship.
The road course stuff is the prime example: Fans loved road courses when Chase dominated them. Now that he hasn't won on a road course in something like four years, they want them gone.

The biggest thing that will take down and is reducing the hate on playoffs is the sense that a lot of people have that they won't ever hear about playoffs again after the year is over (in spite of this not actually being announced and many people warning they'll exist in some iteration). Why complain about something if the expectation is that you are listening and making a correction (next year)?

All I have seen is fans responses to "journalists" or others that have been associated with NASCAR racing for a long time.

Countless online polls. Fans overwhelmingly want them gone.
It's media people saying they should stay.
That didn't seem to bother IndyCar viewers. I don't remember but how often did that happen? Even Kenseth only locked it up with one to go.

You must not be understanding what I'm saying.
I'm literally arguing in favor of eliminating the playoffs.
Pretty much Nascar took a somewhat controversial finish for the cup championship and started re-writing the sport of racing. They have never looked back.

More pointedly: the people who are loudest that they should stay are the same people whose careers depend on access provided by NASCAR and their media partners. If NASCAR and NBC tells them to be in favor of season long titles and to call fans who want a playoff morons, they will do it without questioning it.

Yep, opinions differ. Watching SVG and Zilisch battle it out at Sonoma was one of the highlight races of the year.

Agreed. Do i wish Chase still kicked ass on them and won all the time? Sure do. But damn, I still ****** love road courses. They have some of the best races. So no idea why Andy thinks Chase fans hate them now.
I enjoyed the Amigo win in his home country also. He had all kinds of trouble but he still pulled off the win and the crowd went nutz.

The only thing that is absolutely clear is that there won't be a one race playoff after this year. Clearly everyone with influence thinks the way things will be done this year sucks ass and needs to go to hell and die but you know, make sure to watch the Game 7 Moment this year when it gets down to about 15 to go and they throw a caution to bunch up the miraculously top-4 running finalists (again).
I too cannot believe, FWIW, that the ratings are down again (even considering the changes with how they are calculated).
I was so curious what i did to get tagged in this thread of terrible ideas I avoid reading lol.

Bob can't imagine his life without having new cutlines every few weeks each fall to obsessively count points for 16th place, 12th place, etc. It's so fulfilling.
I kid. He's a great reporter in terms of covering details of the sport. That's different than being a good opinion columnist with perspective.

Some people have floated the idea of making the final round 3 races instead of 1. Maybe they're looking at that.
I believe there’s no way NASCAR ditches the playoffs. They will make modifications and Pockrass is likely hearing chatter from sources. So what is the best modified format that has realistic chance of being adopted? Assuming it remains 10 races, I’d hope for:
> Modify the “win and your in” concept, by requiring a winning driver to be at least 20th or higher in points to remain in the playoffs. Would keep an accidental victory by Cody Ware at Talladega from possibly depriving another team their well earned position.
> Eliminate the last race champion format. Create a playoff points system that richly rewards race winners and top 10 finishes. Allow the points battle to play out the remainder of the playoffs.
> One response to Pockrass suggested having the playoff format run through the first five races, then eliminate half the field, reset points so remaining teams are bunched up for the final 5. Not sure what I think about that one. But if it takes that to please NASCAR relative “drama” then I’d take it over what we have now.

I’m once again reading that NCAA Tournament expansion to 76 teams is imminent, and the replies are mostly what you’d expect. I think there’s a lot of opportunity for NASCAR here to go against the grain and become one of the very few major sports that hasn’t watered down its regular season into a meaningless slog.
I have to give NASCAR credit for still having less than half the teams get into the playoffs.

Agreed, I don't recall ever seeing an "official" poll on this issue, just a bunch of diehard NASCAR fans (which are probably old like me) chatting away. I was hoping @HoneyBadger had something he could share.
I would like to see one of you find a survey that positively shows all these people who you claim are out there that love the current playoff system. In all of my travels on the web I got nothing. Maybe a couple of positive comments about the current format among 50 others that want a format change. Of course you always have a few tweakers in threads who want 3, 5 or 5 races or half a dozen drivers going head to head etc. But it's no contest for a 36 race season.

This is a perpetually aggrieved fanbase. You have 20 years old on Reddit waxing nostalgic for the full season system. The minute someone pulls a late 90s Jeff Gordon and pounds the field, they’ll start bitching about it.
We have people who are nostalgic for snore fest tracks. Whatever NASCAR does, these nuts want the opposite.

I read Bob’s article and as usual for playoff defense, it’s mostly complete nonsense. Has all the usually strawmen, such as “good points day” and “playoffs make wins matter.” Both of which are nonsense, but it’s especially annoying since Bob has been covering this Motorsport for like 30 years now, so he of all people should know better.

I think he covered all the bases. Who knows Fox could lay him off next week and he could works for another network or get a plumb job at Nascar. Pretty sure Bob is looking out for Bob. I pay more attention to people who don't have a dog in the hunt.

Every time there’s a poll on this online, it’s overwhelming. But that’s not good enough for playoff defenders.
The postseason is the most polarizing thing NASCAR has ever done. And when they did that, it was the beginning of NASCAR reinventing the sport.

The Chase was polarizing when it was announced and continues to be polarizing especially in its playoff format.
Fans never asked for this. Drivers never asked for this. NBC and TNT did.
No fan asked for the new playoff format. NBC did.
The only reason keeping the playoffs around is still a thing is because NBC.
