F1 in US heading to Apple TV

I normally watch F1 maybe once a year. Often that was Monaco as a warm-up for Indy and Charlotte. That didn't impress me.

This year I gave a different track a shot and enjoyed what I saw. I thought maybe it was time to look the series full-time in 2026, or at least more often.

A couple of weeks later this deal was floated and I immediately dropped any thought of adding F1 to my viewing schedule. Moving to Apple isn't costing them my fanship, since it didn't exist anyway. But F1 is not enough for me to pay for a service with nothing else that interests me.

I watch every F1 race and sometimes watch the qualifying and it's been very convenient because I have ESPN. I have no plans to pay more to watch F1 on Apple.

Problem is, my wife watches way more tv than I do and has mentioned getting Apple TV so...... I just get fed up with all these new ways to pay more for more stuff when I already have what I want. Wife says it's the way of the future.

As part of the agreement, select races will be shown free on Apple TV (meaning no subscription required).

That's the modern equivalent of a few races being on ABC.

They had a decent offer from commercial free ESPN but instead took the higher offer from Apple and put it behind a paywall.

ESPN is a paywall itself. You either have to have cable or have to pay for ESPN's streaming service.

This is a bad deal however, I'm not saying otherwise. Apple TV has been a disaster for MLS, and MLB and Apple ended their agreement not even halfway through their contract.

So I'm guessing I'll not get the pre-game show anymore that Sky provides. What will Apple have? The pre-game was often better than the race itself.

it’s more likely for Apple to give F1 a dedicated commentary team rather than ESPN just playing Sky Sports F1 surprise me if Apple become the global broadcaster

I’ve always used Apple Music so I’ll probably just end up with the Apple One bundle. Still, this just seems to be such an own goal. The ESPN family of networks were a perfect partner to help take F1 into the public consciousness and fully capitalize on the popularity of Drive to Survive.

In the U.S. to be relevant you need to start to be part of the culture. You wake up in the American houses and you talk about the sport, you talk about the events. And that is really the aim that we want to have with Apple.
Sure, because the average household is more likely to log into Apple TV on Sunday mornings than flip to a SportsCenter showing that leads directly into a Grand Prix.

I have been finding myself leaning more and more on
YouTube event highlight vids and have been satisfied with that.
It does get tricky though to avoid spoilers before seeing the highlight.
Looks like I will wait and see and probably do highlights for F1 next year.
Kinda maxed out on app scripts as of now.

What’s weird is it’s easier to avoid spoilers now than in the past because the social media giants have changed their algorithms to force political propaganda out.

I remember knowing who won before the Olympic primetime shows in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016. 2021 I saw everything live on peacock. 2024, I had no idea who won what before NBC Primetime.
