Jim Hurtubise was as tough as they come. Famously, it's said he told the doctors, after suffering severe burns at the 1964 Milwaukee Mile, to fuse his surgically rebuilt hands with fingers curled like a claw so he could grip a steering wheel. "Herk" denies the story...

I don't watch open wheel much these days like I did as a kid, but he was one of if not the best I ever seen growing up racing vs Juan Pablo in Cart before his wreck.
