Bill Mazerowski, may the Hall of Famer R.I.P.

Maz was a 10 time All Star and led the NL 9 times in assists for second basemen. He turned a major league record 1,706 double plays and earned the nickname "no hands". The combination of Maz and shortstop Dick Groat was something to see, as well as when Gene Alley was shortstop.

Bill James is widely regarded as the most influential baseball analyst of the modern era. His work reshaped how teams, media, and fans understand performance, value, and strategy. James has stated that Maz is the greatest defensive player for his position, by far.

I have been to many Pirate games at the old Forbes Field and watched Maz perform his magic. It was worth the price of admission to see him take infield practice. He is my favorite baseball player of all time. His historic home run in 1960 against the Yankees in the World Series in the ninth inning which won the game for the Pirates will always be remembered. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed his play.

Thanks for posting this. To be honest he was before my time and I only remember the fond words of those who watched him play. But I have read and heard enough to know he was great and that he inspired many like you.
