Nothing anyone can say will convince me that Cleetus' presence in the top 3 series makes the sport look like anything but a traveling circus.
I dont care how many internet fans this guy who most people dont know about has. Its yet another goofy look for the sport.

Yeah, he is going to start holding late model racing at his track. Might draw big in the winter months.

I notice he's listed on all ARCA documents as Garrett Mitchell - entry lists, practice speeds, Q order, etc. NASCAR could have also insisted he use his given name. I think they should have, but apparently they don't have a problem with it.
Between losing the charter lawsuit and finally acknowledging their decade-long playoff experiment wasn't working, one very part-time driver's name doesn't make top ten on the Ridiculous Appearance list.

It's the name he uses for his entertainment career, like the names used by the pro wrestlers that show up as grand marshals, honorary starters, network guests, etc. It's not one I would have picked but it's just a name. It's harmless.Cleetus McFarland is a professional name???
'Cleetus' is no more ridiculous than 'Bubba' or 'Buckshot'. I know people named 'McFarland'; it's no sillier than the names 'McLeod', 'McDowell', 'Van Gisbergen', 'Nemechek', 'Zilisch', or 'Allmendinger'.
Only in terms of him being a part time driver who became famous outside racing using names that aren't the one on his birth certificate.
I don't recall anyone here making that claim. Of his few comments I've seen, he isn't either.

The guy has shown up twice at the national level and has no announced plans to run regularly. Based strictly on those results and his limited schedule, he's not going to be running up front. He's getting way more attention than his results merit but that's not under his control. He'll be gone soon, along with the media distraction.

Huh. I learned something today.
Garrett Mitchell adopted the name Cleetus McFarland in 2015 while creating a parody video for 1320Video at the Rocky Mountain Race Week, where he played a tongue-in-cheek, patriotic car enthusiast character. The name was spontaneously suggested by Kyle Loftis (founder of 1320Video) as a humorous alternative to "Dale" when Mitchell was mocking a Ricky Bobby-style character, and the video quickly went viral, leading Mitchell to embrace the persona as his primary brand. Although his legal name is Lawrence Garrett Mitchell, the character's success became so significant that he now primarily uses Cleetus McFarland professionally, even adopting the triple-name format of Cleetus McFarland Mitchell for official NASCAR hard cards to satisfy licensing requirements while retaining his iconic identity.

I suppose I have to reconsider how much this aspect of it DOES annoy me about Cleetus. It's not just his presence that I consider a circus, it's the attention.
I appreciate how boringly neutral you are on this, and it's probably the most grounded take in this thread.

Cleetus was in the top 10 yesterday, (started in the back) before his car laid down on him yesterday. Oil all over all of his tires when the line blew, Cleetus slid sideways thru 1 and 2 with a ****pit full of smoke, brought the car to a stop undamaged. Both cars behind him just touched the oil, over reacted, (didn't know how to broadslide in the first place), and they both hit the wall with big damage. Somebody replace the oil line on Cleetus's car so he is good to go for DEGA BABY!!.
I think the clown show is proving to be the haters, not the driver on the track. Stay tuned.
