Are any of you following the Steubenville, Ohio Rape case?

If you don't know about it. I will try to sum it up in for you. Two Steubenville Big Red football players Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond allegedly raped a 16 yr old girl after she passed out drunk at a party. The trial started yesterday. It is in juvenile court where they face a trial by a single judge, no jury and face confinement in a juvenile facility until their 21st birthdays. They reported took her to several other house parties that night as kind of a sexual assault tour. Steubenville is right across the Ohio River from West Virginia. It is a really run down old steel town for the most part, but like most everywhere else it has a some much nicer areas where people have a lot of money. The homes they keep showing on the news, where much of this allegedly occured, are much nicer than any part of Steubenville I've ever been in. Of course I've only been there a few times and didn't really go anywhere I didn't have to for the work I was doing there.

There are a lot of things about this case that are getting a lot of people boiling-over angry. As well it should. There are several videos and picture or two that have come out involving this case. One of the videos is a guy laughing at a party about how they just straight raped that girl. Saying things like, well maybe she did want it, it could have been her last wish. In the main photo, a slumped and seemingly passed out 16-year-old West Virginia girl is being carried, her wrists grasped by Trent Mays, her ankles by teammate Ma'lik Richmond.

Her head is sagged back, her hair dragging on the floor. She looks, if not dead, then incapacitated. With the context of the two boys having been charged with her rape, the natural reaction of anyone of any measure of decency was horror.

The most powerful evidence could come from two eyewitnesses.

One is Mark Cole, who testified at a preliminary hearing in October he videotaped Mays using his fingers to penetrate the possibly passed out girl in the backseat of a car. Later Cole, and friend Anthony Craig, testified they saw Mays again digitally penetrating the girl in Cole's basement while an exposed Richmond attempted to put his ***** in the girl's mouth and later slapped it on her naked hip. More camera phone photos were taken at that time – including one described Wednesday of both the girl and Mays naked from the waist down – although they were soon deleted.

I may not be the most objective person on this whole thing, as I have two teenage daughters myself. But, even if I didn't, how could you not hear these kinds of details and not think "what if it was your daughter?"
This is, of course, getting a lot of media attention around here as we are a fairly short distance from there. They say it is getting a lot of national attention as well, but I never really watch national news so I wouldn't know. I did watch an entire episode of ESPN's Outside The Lines the other day. It was on there because the alleged rapists reportedly got some preferential treatment as

Sorry, the end of my post got cut off. I was saying they reportedly got preferential treatment in the beginning, in particular, because they are big time players in a place where high school football is king.

Has any of you heard anything about this?

I've been trying to keep up with this story, I sure hope justice is served in this case.

I saw it and it's disgusting. Why are they in juvenile court? I thought that more were charged originally?

Only 2 have been charged. They are being tried as juvi's, not adults. So no matter what, they will be free at 21.

The online hacktivist group Anonymous was a big reason this story has gotten the national attention. They heard about it from a NY Times article and went full on vigilante style on anyone involved. There has been a LOT of evidence of stuff that they have discovered about the town and this case that isn't even used. They organized many protests outside the town hall and such. They hacked a main athletic boosters (also runs the fan website rollredroll.com) email account and found photos of underage girls and such, allegedly provided by members of the football team after the booster paid them to do so. Allegedly it was part of some child porn ring. They have said that along with the 2 charged, they've provided evidence that should send at least 11 others to trial. (They did provide the evidence and names of the 11, but I can't seem to find that, here is a DOX they released on them though.)

This whole town is corrupt as hell. From the sheriff, down to the head football coach. If you don't know about Steuby, they are all about High School football. Seen the movie Friday Night Lights? Imagine that, times ten. That's how important football is to this town. If you are on the team, you have free reign to do whatever you wish without consequences. Coach Reno is a god in that town and he runs the show. It's sickening. Rumors of the coach being mixed up with the sheriff who is mixed up in drugs and all kinds of other corruption in the town. The location of this rape? At one of the coaches houses.

Between the OP and me, we have only scraped the surface as to how far this story goes and how deep the corruption is in this town. There has been many more allegations that have been uncovered that haven't been touched upon in this thread either. It's just mind boggling how far this all goes, and nothing has been done about it.

New York Times Article

This is the sickening video that Benevolent was talking about where the kid was laughing about it and saying the girl was "dead".

Maggie Jordan @MaggieJordanACN - Steubenville:
Text message presented in court from defendant to friend
mentioned SHS's football coach. "I got Reno.He took care of it."

Rape should be a death penalty crime. Damn shame these two are going to get off - even if they're found guilty.
Agreed. if nothing else, they should be thrown in as adults.

and where are the girl and her parents in all this?

They don't disclose the victims name.
I understand that, I'd like to assume they took her to the ER for checkout after all this, but I'm sure if they left if for redneck justice, those boys would either be dead, or be a different gender by now.

wow, what a mess. That's too much to even read. I'm surprised her father didn't dig a hole and throw them in it. They need to be tried as adults and thrown to the federal prison system. I mean really.

Thanks for the links. These kids absolutely amaze me the more I read about them. How could you have so little empathy for someone in such a vulnerable state? It's not just the rapists, although they are certainly the worst offenders, it's the people who just watched it and did nothing, or not enough to stop it. I did my share of partying when I was that age myself and I know it isn't easy to stand up to things that happen, especially when you are pretty drunk yourself. But, there are certain lines that just can't be crossed.

Guilty! I hope they don't share a cell and have big ol' bubba's for cell mates to fully participate in the experience of being locked up.

Absolutely disgusting. Mays gets minimum of 2 years, Richmond gets one year. Both will be out at 21 at the longest, and will receive credit for time served. So in 9 months, Richmond can be free.

It's a shame these are likely going to be the only 2 tried. It's even more shame that we see how corrupt the town is from the Sheriff down, and nothing is likely going to be done about it.

Wow! Mike Dewine, Ohios Attorney General, seems to be going after Jefferson County! He says this investigation is far from over with!!!

You can say what you want about Mike Dewine, but that guy is like a damn badger when he wants something. I generally don't have much use for politicians. But while Dewine is far from perfect, he does seem more interested in doing his job than being reelected. I cartainly wouldn't want him chasing me.

Grand Jury April 15th. Will provide evidence of evidence tampering, failure to report a felony, etc. Says no stone will be left unturned. More charges and arrests are possible.

16 people refused to talk.

He looks pretty damn determined to make sure more are found guilty.

Good. I have a feeling that he will too. There's something pretty powerful about seeing a picture of a passed out teenager with semen on their stomach. Images like that should drive people to see that anyone who had a part in it happening are brought to answer for it.

At least the higher ups are overriding the lower courts, and willing to drag these kids through the mud pit.

Drag them through the mud pit? Sorry I don't understand. They should have been charged as adults IMO. They should have gotten the maximum jail time.
Someone said "their life was ruined" Good.

Courts need to start handing down serious sentences so people start to think before they do something stupid.

I feel badly for the girl. Sadly, too many men think that a girl being drunk gives them permission to do with her as they please. Too many people think a girl being at a party or getting drunk at a party is automatic consent. This girl's being threatened and harrassed and the rapists are being held up as heroes.

I hate society sometimes.

2 girls were arrested today for making death threats against the victim...via Twitter. Smh.

I saw those tweets. Glad they've been arrested.

Unfortunately, that girl is screwed. The media revealed her identity on national television. Seeing as so many people support the rapists and hate her, I hate to say it but she's marked now.

Wait, they what? I thought she was a minor and they couldnt??

Her name has actually been out for a while. It's not really been a secret. Anonymous accidentally released it I do believe.

If someone is convicted of sexual assault with the level of evidence seen in this particular case, it should result in mandatory nut snippage. JMO.
agreed. I still dont understand why they weren't tried as adults. Really, is there not enough evidence?

1 year for one, 2 for the other. If they were all adults, they'd be looking at a good 10 years or more.

our justice system is broke.

only 2 things are more ridiculous than this trial:

"During rape, a woman's body will shut down"

"When he sees that everbody is dis-armed, he himself will dis-arm"

1 year for one, 2 for the other. If they were all adults, they'd be looking at a good 10 years or more.

They may of only be 16 but there needs to be a common sense law. 16 year olds should have enough of common sense to know when a women is yelling no that what they are doing is immoral and wrong. Like my parents taught me if your old enough to be haivng sex than you need to accept all the responsibility that comes with it. To make matters the media shows sympathy to the guys who did it. Have we as a society stooped so low that we have to show more sympathy to perpetrators than to vicims of these hanis crimes.

Guess this is my daily rant
