Age and racing.

Who should retire first?

no limit if you are in control of your stuff and pass all tests and sponsor wants you.

I think latter is likley most important. I'm not sure godaddy wants a 70 yr old patrick driving for them...I would hope they would, but maybe not.

I'm a fan of both those guys and I'll be bummed when they retire. Jeff said he won't retire until he isn't competitive and Tony will be the next Morgan Shepard.

I definitely don't think Jeff should retire just yet. He is a front runner for the championship.:D

I agree, he is still running competitive, if only he would quit whining.

I think Jeff has few more years left in him. Tony is just about done. he's not the same he was before his accident.

I cannot pick between Jeff and Tony. I think a racer should drive as long as they can get a ride and keep the minimum speed and don't hang out 50 laps down in everyone's way every race.

A double edged sword. Tony definitely has more to struggle with now, on the other hand I think he probably needs to race more for his own state of mine.

Just a hunch I can't prove.

Tony's also now a championship team owner. He's still not physically 100% so maybe he should concentrate on that.

I don't think "age" has anything to do with how a driver performs. Hell, Biffle is 45, Kenseth is 42, JR is 40, JJ is 39 along with Harvick, and Stewart is 3 mos older then Gordon at the ripe ole age of 43. . . . .just to name a few. I dare anybody walk up to JJ and tell him he should retire, and still expect to be standing as he'd prolly knock ya to the ground. Fans always declare that Gordon should retire; that he's getting too old. I don't hear anybody saying Gee, Kenseth, (who btw is only 6 mos younger then Gordon) should retire. . . "Boy oh boy is he getting too old!" As long as they're competitive, as far as I'm concerned, "Let 'em race!"

I think when the subject comes up, and it does frequently, it's that fans wish Gordon or Stewart would retire and give their favorite drivers a chance at more media attention and wins.

You know, in certain sports, such as football, if you have a quarterback, Brett Favre for example, who's getting up there in age, and you say that about all those who question Favre's ability, before Favre gets a career-ending concussion, and memory loss, you'd be wrong. Just saying.

I think if the driver is still putting good performances together week in and week out age really shouldn't matter much at all. How old was Mark Martin when he finally retired? I also think Jeff Gordon had another year or two left in the tank that he could have put good results together. It is showing though with Smoke this season that the writing may just be on the wall that it is truly his time to walk away.
