We've known how big of a crapshoot the Daytona 500 is. There is as much luck as there is skill in winning the race...or even finishing. Take a look at these numbers:



They should get Lotto, MGM, or somebody else to be the presenting sponsor of the race. Almost the same amount of odds either way. :rolleyes:
 
It’s the crown jewel of NASCAR. They’re going to do whatever it takes to get the W!

But unfortunately I can’t use that same excuse for Dega.

Agreed. Lets not forget it's the frickin Daytona 500, you send it for the win

I will say this, it's more of a "Daytona" thing than anything right now. Both Atlanta & Talladega reward the fastest and best handling cars in my opinion

The thing is, if you exercise too much caution, you'll run 30th. With the guarantee of a playoff spot on the line, you can't be timid, especially if you are a fringe playoff team. The system FORCES you to drive over your head.

That statistic proves that the race is a hard one to win. It pays a very large amount for doing so. I would say jackpot instead of crapshoot if I was describing it.

It's hard to win mainly because your odds of actually finishing with an intact race car are so small. The statistic at the start of the thread says it all. Some fans find that interesting or exciting. I don't. I much prefer that better drivers and better cars control their own destiny more than can be had at Daytona or Talladega.

As the resident degen advantage player for the forum, I actually agree with your notion of calling it a jackpot. That very much matches how I see plate-style pack racing in terms of a "competition" - just like a slot machine or keno or the lottery. Hell, even just like those, once in a great while someone figures something out to beat the system.

I go back to when I was a Tony Stewart fan. He was a great plate racer. He won many times at Daytona except for the 500. It was usually being involved in the big one that kept him from ever winning it. It wasn't lack of skill. It was dumb luck.
 
I don't think they're driving "over their head" or even suggesting they are. This isn't about their car control or lack thereof. SVG is literally saying "We're expected to wreck the car to get maximum points" which honestly, I don't know how this is any different from how it was when the tapered spacers were called restrictor plates.

But yes, I continue to agree: jackpot is a great term for winning the Daytona 500. Even requires the same level of skill as a slot player.
