The Chase Era footage made me feel nostalgic. That mid-2000s - mid-2010s timeframe was, admittedly perhaps by coincidence, my favorite time following NASCAR. I walked away not too long after the winner take all gimmick became a thing. I don't view the drivers' championships during that time as any less valid than any others, but that format was absolutely not for me.

Dunno if I'll be signing back up for a TV service just because of this, but it definitely makes me want to start paying attention to it again. I'll at least peek at more results and highlights now.

Look, I get it that many here want the old, original system back. I lived that for many years, and while the first Chase, and now Chase 2, may not ever seem to be good enough, I don’t really get the nostalgia. Consider Cup in the revised format. Sixteen drivers get in, with a revamped points assignment to start based on where they finished at the end of the regular season.

If they used the old system today, how many drivers would realistically be in position to compete for the championship over the last 10 races? As I recall in those way back years, it was just a handful that still had a shot. The run to the championship was not very suspenseful except for a few years during the modern era. Yes those were amazing runs! But I see advantages with using the new Chase. At first blush it seems too many drivers, and I think it probably is. But the ones starting toward the back are WELL behind the leading cars from the start. It will take a gargantuan series of circumstances to give any of them a chance to race their way from the back to a championship. Yet, what if they did? I’d say they earned it.

Most likely the drivers and teams who have run strong up to the Chase will continue to battle for the championship. I agree with Junior that everything within the races will matter more. Win and you’re in was horrible. Now winning a race means extra points over the rest of the field. If anything is still gimmicky it’s the stages, and stage points, but it does produce hard racing to earn them. What I don’t want is someone edging out for a championship primarily on having a boatload of stage points. THAT could lead to another revision.

I respect those who want a simple 36 race system, I’d certainly take it and not look back, but the Chase does create some extra excitement, and the sizzle sells the steak on TV networks.

For some, the number of eligible drivers or how long the championship remains in question takes a back seat to a dominant driver rewarded for that dominance, network sizzle or not.
 


I like how they're trumpeting "No eliminations" when the main feature of a Chase cutoff is to "eliminate" two thirds of the field from mattering

"Hey everyone, we got rid of most of the unpopular changes you hated. We've struck the right balance!"

This is the equivalent of Coca Cola reacting to the New Coke debacle by pledging that going forward, cans would be filled with 60% of the classic recipe.
 
Better than what we had, but it still keeps the two things I hated about the Chase. Too many races, too many drivers. Should have been five races on five different kinds of drivers for five drivers, but there are two many asses that need kissed because everybody whines if they aren't included even though they had absolutely no business being there in the first place. I want the "playoffs" to be so damn hard to make that you weed out all of the pretenders before we even begin, and the damn thing shouldn't consume 30% of the season.

I am confident in Ross and Connor but I don’t think SVG will be able to point himself in. Under the old system, SVG was basically guaranteed a spot.

A bold prediction would be SVG making the Chase at all.
 
Remember when the new marketing was going to be all about how bold and strong NASCAR is about knowing who they are? Instead we get a fence sitting committee who think they've found just the right middle ground between two polar opposites.
 
When the Chase was first introduced for 2004, it was the insistent implementation of it over loud objections of fans. NASCAR polled fans about the idea on their website following the 2003 season, and fans overwhelmingly rejected it. They shut down the polls and went ahead with it anyway. 2005 was the first year of decline in viewership (2nd year of Chase) for Nascar. Guess Jim is still saying no, didn't learn a damn thing from the lawsuit. If a full season Championship is Ok for IMSA, why not for Cup? TV deal?

NBC claimed they were hands off and letting NASCAR decide.

The latest excuses going around have to do with their being driver and sponsor contracts that contain clauses relative to Playoffs / Chase performance. As if we're supposed to believe for a single second that Jim France is constrained by that.

Ehhh... better than nothing.

I like that wins mean more points... I do wish there that wins would reward points to be carried into the Chase seeding. Wasn't this a thing in the Chase for part or most of it? There were bonus points for winning races that paid out at the start of the Chase, as I recall.

Existing driver performance clauses didn’t stop introducing the playoffs with rounds and eliminations.
