14 non-Daytona/Talladega races, 4 winners

So is a half million dollars. You can spend it, but you dont have too.

Owners keep asking to be saved from themselves, so, apparently this isn't the case. They have to spend it.

This change was necessary for the implementation of the rules. If the teams buy one so they can science out an advantage then the expense is on them. It was not required by NASCAR

It never is, but you know, that whole "winning" deal. IMO when you have to drop a half million (conservative number I think) just to play by the rules, your rules are way screwed up. This and the pit lane monitoring bull**** is comical at a time when this sport is trying to contain costs. Just wait, there's more, a new rules package next year. I truly do not understand how this sport is being run right now, but I sure hope it survives.

You are gonna complain about that then complain about teams spending MILLIONS in the wind tunnel. Spending Millions on HP research and braking systems. Teams will always spend to form an advantage no matter what NASCAR does. I dont even know what you are talking about with "pit lane monitoring and cost.

Those are givens. NASCAR doesn't need to add to it. Pit lane monitoring system--the elaborate camera system designed to catch everything that goes wrong on pit road.

What you continue to fail to understand is NASCAR cant stop them from buying an OSS. We are a free market society. The Pit road monitoring system was brought to take away human error and perceived favoritism on making calls not to mention getting people off of pit road during a live stop.

They wouldn't buy it if they didn't have to be competitive. Human error and perceived favoritism? Think we had an official--who apparently wasn't taken off of pit road as you suggest the system should have--high five a team on TV. Sorry. The OSS is a complete waste of resources, and has done nothing to improve what needs to be fixed. Put the Kool-Aide down.

We're almost halfway into the 2018 season, and so far we've had six different winners and only four multi winners. This season has to be some sort of record in that regard.

What's crazier, is that chevy as a whole only has 1 win! If that wasn't enough, their lone win wasn't Hendrick related and it came at the first race of the regular season; a wreck filled race that saw 9 cars finish on the lead lap. It was a fluke win basically.

That's crazy.

Alot of drivers are guaranteed to make the chase on points. More than we've ever seen in this chase format.

ol Rev's a good one, he never lets facts get in the way of a good story. About the OSS:

NASCAR Employee
We have one that stays at the R&D Center, and any team can come use it (for free). They schedule appointments with one of our officials, and usually have 30 or 60 minute blocks.

and on the rant that it was such a big deal to have one, teams have had something similar for years.

NASCAR Employee
They were stacked to start the season, but have slowed down some. As somebody else pointed out somewhere in this thread, most teams already had similar technology in their shop. The difference is the OSS spits out the data a lot faster than previous tools.

I've tried to explain this to him, along with a bunch of other stuff but Im drinking some kool aide. I'll have what hes having

Agreed. I don't see the opposing point here at all. I can't imagine arguing that NASCAR shouldn't have invested in superior, more objective officiating methods given the importance of those calls. Unless the argument is that they shouldn't officiate at all.

yeah I can live without automatics with a clutch, paddle shifters, traction control, tire monitors and all the rest of the numerous gadgets they can stick on a steering wheel. Inspect the hell out of em and keep it as simple as possible. Build the car to the OSS specs and go race the hell out of it. Ya fail, go to the end of the line.

From this point on last year, Toyota won 14 of the final 20 races - after winning 2 of the first 16. I have strong doubts about Chevy being able to come close to that kind of surge. I definitely think Larson has some wins in him though.

This is an excellent thread. I missed it while travelling, but some very good thoughts here. I am hoping a couple more cars can take the final step toward race-winning speed sooner rather than later... time will tell.

The Big 3 era we’re in doesn’t bother me much. I like these kind of things where our title contenders distinguish themselves from the field and fight it out for the season. May the best man win. However what’s also fun is seeing which driver/team can enter the fray and make themselves relevant. As soon as Chevy figures out what they are doing hope someone from the Larson/Elliott/JJ trio there can make it a Big 4

I'm thinking that might take years.

One season's worth of races and the 4, 18, and 78 have won 27 of 36 races.

Maybe if there weren't stages there could be more winners bc of short pitting
Maybe if there was no stages, Nascar would keep phony cautions so they can manipulate when a caution would favor a specific driver. Would you really like to go back to snoozing drivers for 1/2 the race.

I find it interesting that the superior engineering on the big 3 cars doesn't translate to wins for the other cars in their teams' stables.

4 JGR cars yet the speed in the 18 isn't translating to the other 3. Hamlin's finishes are good, Jones average (other than a plate win), and Suarez is chilling with the RCR cars way back in the field.

All 4 SHR cars are fast but only the 4 winning at the standard tracks plus Bowyer's Matinsville and rain shortened Michigan wins.

Presumably the 11, 19, and 20 have the same resources available as the 18*, and the 10, 14, and 41 have the same resources as the 4. So while those teams may have much faster cars, it clearly can't be all car

*I don't include the 78 because I don't know how much info/engineering is shared between those camps
