16 Chase Drivers... Overkill?

This is the closing statement below, I don't agree with it, doesn't make sense. More drivers than ever will race for the title, and points drivers, and erratic one win drivers styles both work.

Bluntly speaking, there are too many spots in the 2014 Chase for the Sprint Cup. What's the point in having so many entries in the Chase if only a small amount of drivers are going to make a run for the title in the next 10 weeks?

Not too shabby for a Bleacher Report article but I think the writer needs to brush up on his arithmetic.

"There are going to be four, maybe five drivers out there that will be championship material throughout the 10 weeks. That leaves 11 or 12 drivers out there doing nothing more than taking up space."

Seems to me that if only four or five drivers are championship material then that leaves more like 38 or 39 drivers out there taking up space.

The point of the closing statement is that their are only so many true title contenders.. Who really has a chance to win the title this year? Harvick, Gordon, Johnson, Jr, Keslowski and Logano. Anyone else would be shocking.

you at least stuck your neck out and made a prediction, the article writer didn't have the stones to do so. He just implies "a small amount". IMO just about any driver if they get hot, can advance. Will that happen? I can't say, but neither can whiney baby who wrote the article.

Take away the S & P cars and you've got close to half the field in the chase!
Can't wait for the uproar if Jimmy, Jeff, Jr , Harvick, Logano, BK or a busch brother has a bad race at one of the first three tracks and is eliminated.
Even better will be the brains explanation of how multi race winners were eliminated and someone who got in on points alone with no wins is the chump,,I mean champ...

It doesn't matter much... 3 weeks in its back to 12... Then only 8.. Soooo who cares? Is my question.

After the fiasco that was Richmond of 2013, which exposed The Chase for the fraud that it is, I say we should just get rid of The Chase and come up with a new points system that's a balance between rewarding wins and consistency.

If we didn't have 16 in the chase , nobody would get in on points .

And some race winners would be left out if they went back to 12 in the chase.

I'm sticking with my original feelings on the new format. Give me good hard racing and I won't care much about who wins the championship.

I just think the Sprint Cup Championship needs to be renamed to "The Brian's Cup".

Are you talking about a 36 race Chase with 43 drivers starting at Daytona in February?

and after Homestead, Brian reaches into his pants and pulls out the cup! Surprise, surprise, it's made out of Gold!

16 is too many. But I think they did it to pretty much assure that anyone who wins will be in the Chase. They could have done a 13 driver Chase and eliminated 3 in each of the first three eliminations instead of 4, but then there would be a greater chance of having a winner not qualify for the Chase.

They picked 16 because of what happened last year maybe? and you will forgive, I did not read the article. It was just something I thought of.

Jeez u long time fans r like hippies from the 60s who just can't deal with technology... Its never going to be like it used to... Put your rotary phones away :p lol

We're sometimes amazed that so many new fans don't give a crap . :(

Jimmie Johnson didn't get the memo . He's still points racin. Go Jimmie !

In addition to 16 Chasers virtually ensuring the "win and you get in" concept, 16 makes their elimination format work better, also.

However, with that same type of format, but starting with 12 drivers instead of 16 and eliminating 3 drivers at a time instead of 4.

with 7 races left: 9 contenders instead of 12

with 4 races left: 6 contenders instead of 8

And going into Homestead there would be 3 drivers left in contention the Cup championship instead of 4.

edit: kinda like ToyYoda said earlier . . .

Only thing is though, this new format lends itself to more shenanigans than the previous formats ever did. I'm still not a fan of it, but once I see it in action I might change my mind.

Seriously tho... The Chase is all I've ever known and is actually one of the things that attracted me to sport... I remember at one point saying somethin like it"NASCAR has playoffs? I never knew that...Nice!"

Nothing wrong with 16 being part of the all new Chase format IMO. Gives more fans a reason to tune in for the final 10 races. Drivers aren't going to luck their way into the final race at Homestead. The cream of the crop will prevail. If we have to have this dang Chase format then this is as good as any other format for it. It will generate excitement for several races along the way to the ultimate prize @ Homestead. 2004 ended what I've always have felt were championship seasons. It's a new era. In another 30 years nobody will give this current format a second thought. It'll be the norm.

Personally, I like the new Chase format. Would prefer none but this is better than the old Chase formats.

I'd like to see how it plays out before I say that I like it or not. But it is interesting to see how many different winners we had this season.

It does not matter how many are in the chase. Its going to come down to 3 or so drivers anyway when it all washes out. 24,48,88 pretty much the way I see it.
